This is the fourth edition of the African Small Publishers’ Catalogue. Once again we have many more publishers and some of the publishers we featured last time have either left the scene, or their circumstances have changed. The catalogue is a showcase of the variety and extent of independent and small publishing in Africa. It is still weighted with many more South African publishers, but each time we have brought out a new edition, there are more listings from a wider spread of African publishers. The catalogue aims to uncover and highlight the work and existence of small publishers in Africa. I hope that librarians, booksellers, books’ page editors, educators, readers, writers and bigger publishers will be enriched by having access to these publishers and that the publishers themselves will find new customers, access to funds and technologies that will enable them to thrive. It is thrilling to see all the writers and publishers who are toiling away, doing extraordinary creative cultural work.
Stock markets are not efficient, returns are incommensurate with risk, investors are irrational, bubbles and crashes recur regularly, analysts are usually wrong, economists even more so, luck is mostly mistaken for skill, myths and misconceptions abound and most of the industry participants are simply noise generators. This is even more true for emerging markets. South Africa can be termed a developed emerging market and is the newest member of the BRICS group. The Effective Investor is the first book to deal specifically with investing in the South African stock market, filling a surprising gap given the widespread interest that has been shown in South Africa as an emerging market and the g...
A neurologist explores the very real world of psychosomatic illness. Most of us accept the way our heart flutters when we set eyes on the one we secretly admire, or the sweat on our brow as we start the presentation we do not want to give. But few of us are fully aware of how dramatic our body's reactions to emotions can sometimes be. Take Pauline, who first became ill when she was fifteen. What seemed at first to be a urinary infection became joint pain, then food intolerances, then life-threatening appendicitis. And then one day, after a routine operation, Pauline lost all the strength in her legs. Shortly after that her convulsions started. But Pauline's tests are normal; her symptoms see...

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Kingfountain Series comes the first novel in a bold and richly imagined world. Theirs is a world of opposites. The privileged live in sky manors held aloft by a secretive magic known only as the Mysteries. Below, the earthbound poor are forced into factory work to maintain the engine of commerce. Only the wealthy can afford to learn the Mysteries, and they use their knowledge to further lock their hold on society. Cettie Pratt is a waif doomed to the world below, until an admiral attempts to adopt her. But in her new home in the clouds, not everyone treats her as one of the family. Sera Fitzempress is a princess born into power. She yearns to meet the orphan girl she has heard so much about, but her father deems the girl unworthy of his daughter's curiosity. Neither girl feels that she belongs. Each seeks to break free of imposed rules. Now, as Cettie dreams of living above and as Sera is drawn to the world below, they will follow the paths of their own choosing. But both girls will be needed for the coming storm that threatens to overturn both their worlds.
