In December 1995, the Court of Justice of the European Union delivered its judgment in its most famous case to date: the Bosman case. Twenty years later, this book explores in detail how this landmark judgment legally and politically transformed the relationship between the European Union and sport. Written by leading academics in the field, the ten contributions in this book reflect on how Bosman fundamentally shaped the application of EU law to sport and its transformative effects on sports governance. The book’s innovative perspectives on the Bosman ruling makes it important reading for scholars, practitioners and policy-makers concerned with EU law and Sports law. With a foreword by Pr...
This is an analysis of a significant issue affecting the sports and leisure industry, and rooted in contract and competition law. The issue concerns a battle waged by Jean Marc Bosman, a Belgian professional footballer, to secure his freedom of labour. The judgement of the European Court of Justice settled the European dimension of the dispute. The landmark decision made by the European Court applies to all professional players who are nationals of member states and active in the European Union, and also covers EFTA countries. The book includes a full analysis and history of the Bosman cases, and is supported by the relevant regulations, statutes and transcripts of the court proceedings.

On the 6th of April 2001 Energie Cottbus was the first club in the Bundesliga that played with 11 non-German players (Kicker, 8th April 2001). A spellbinding and varied line-up of recollections of the star turn of the 20th-century South African literary scene. Included in this valuable tribute are detailed memoirs of four of Herman Charles Bosman's keepers of the flame: his colleague George Howard, his cousin Zita Grové, his disciple Lionel Abrahams; and the unpublished chapters by his widow, Helena Lake, never previously collected in book form. In addition there are souvenirs by Bosman's other wives and lovers. Tributes come from his press associates, while much intimate interview material is included to complete this strange portrait of Johannesburg's murderous blue-eyed boy. Their accumulated testimony here gives as good value as Bosman himself ever did during his embattled lifetime.
Sport is recreational, social, educational, healthful, and cultural. It has always been all of these things. Perhaps also it has always been political. In recent years, however, it has become something else besides: economic. Nowadays a lot of money is invested in sport, and sporting competitions often generate enormous amounts of revenue. This has entailed serious repercussions, especially for the relations between individual sportsmen/sportswomen and the sporting clubs and federations that act as brokers for their careers. Into this protected area for decades a closed shop now come the European institutions, especially the European Court of Justice and the European Commission, with the dec...
The focus of this book is on the fifteen-member European Union but its coverage extends to many other bodies which form part of today's Europe, such as the Council of Europe, the European Economic Area and Western European Union.
To live or to be lived... that's the question! 'It was the day that changed my life. But of course I had no clue about that when it happened. I sat that day on a bench in Stanley Park, Vancouver. And I had never felt so sad... so very sad... My life had become a bad dream, almost a horror movie... I still couldn't believe that the angry young man I was only two decades ago, had become such a misery... in poor health... substantially overweighted... income too low, debt too high... And always tired... so tired!' With these words starts Jeffrey Tamson's amazing story. Words that could have been spoken by many millions all over the globe. But then the miracle happens: an unexpected encounter tr...
