Dependable and Historic Computing

This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Brian Randell on the occasion of his 75th birthday, contains a total of 37 refereed contributions. Two biographical papers are followed by the six invited papers that were presented at the conference 'Dependable and Historic Computing: The Randell Tales', held during April 7-8, 2011 at Newcastle University, UK. The remaining contributions are authored by former scientific colleagues of Brian Randell. The papers focus on the core of Brian Randell’s work: the development of computing science and the study of its history. Moreover, his wider interests are reflected and so the collection comprises papers on software engineering, storage fragmentation, computer architecture, programming languages and dependability. There is even a paper that echoes Randell’s love of maps. After an early career with English Electric and then with IBM in New York and California, Brian Randell joined Newcastle University. His main research has been on dependable computing in all its forms, especially reliability, safety and security aspects, and he has led several major European collaborative projects.

The Origins of Digital Computers

My interest in the history of digital computers became an active one when I had the fortune to come across the almost entirely forgotten work of PERCY LUDGATE, who designed a mechanical program-controlled computer in Ireland in the early I ':ICC's. I undertook an investigation of his life and work, during which I began to realise that a large number of early developments, which we can now see as culminating in the modern digital computer, had been most undeservedly forgotten. Hopefully, historians of science, some of whom are now taking up the subject of the development of the computer and accumulating valuable data, particularly about the more recent events from the people concerned, will before too long provide us with comprehensive analytical accounts of the invention of the computer. The present book merely aims to bring together some of the more important and interesting written source material for such a history of computers. (Where necessary, papers have been translated into English, but every attempt has been made to retain the flavour of the original, and to avoid possibly misleading use of modern computing terminology.

Whether the focus is COM, databases, or distributed systems using MTS and COM+, this book offers proven, timeless solutions derived from the authors' years of experience consulting and training in the VB arena. EFFECTIVE VISUAL BASIC addresses general practices, from defensive programming to error handling and object-oriented design. In addition, it covers the critical issues in working with COM: interfaces, compatibility, and class design. Rules for building multi-tier applications are followed by a section on best practices for programming the Web. This book also addresses databases and effective data access, among the most important uses of VB. Highlights include: *Sound programming practices and object-oriented design principles, as applicable in VB.NET as in VB6 *Writing code that runs correctly in both MTS and COM+ environments *Improving scalability by not necessarily configurin

The Turing Guide

Alan Turing has long proved a subject of fascination, but following the centenary of his birth in 2012, the code-breaker, computer pioneer, mathematician (and much more) has become even more celebrated with much media coverage, and several meetings, conferences and books raising public awareness of Turing's life and work. This volume will bring together contributions from some of the leading experts on Alan Turing to create a comprehensive guide to Turing that will serve as a useful resource for researchers in the area as well as the increasingly interested general reader. The book will cover aspects of Turing's life and the wide range of his intellectual activities, including mathematics, code-breaking, computer science, logic, artificial intelligence and mathematical biology, as well as his subsequent influence.

Writing Computer and Information History

This is not a book about the history of computing or the history of information. Instead, it is a meta-historical book about the research and writing of these types of history. The formal presentation of historical research in the form of a publication often hides the process by which the topic was selected, boundaries were drawn, evidence was selected, analytic approach was chosen and applied, results were presented, how this work fits into a larger body of scholarship, the implicit goals and biases of the author, and many other similar issues. This process of learning about the various ways to carry out computer history or information history can be enriched by this collection of reflectiv...

The conferences on software engineering were held under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. These conferences are deliberately designed and structured to focus expert attention on what is not known. The participants are carefully selected to bring together a variety of complimentary viewpoints. This book examines shortcomings in software practice and technique and suggests alternatives that could overcome many of the problems. It lays out the frame of mind applicable to the production of dependable software. The conclusions and recommendations for further research were reached through intensive discussion, presented here for use by the scientific community.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 20th International Workshop on Security Protocols, held in Cambridge, UK, in April 2012. Following the tradition of this workshop series, each paper war revised by the authors to incorporate ideas from the workshop, and is followed in these proceedings by an edited transcription of the presentation and ensuing discussion. The volume contains 14 papers with their transcriptions as well as an introduction, i.e. 29 contributions in total. The theme of the workshop was "Bringing protocols to life".

The electronic patient record

In England, implementing electronic patient record (EPR) systems is one of the main aims of the 10-year National Programme for Information Technology (NPfIT). This report finds a lack of clarity about what information will be contained. It also points to some notable successes too including the agreement on a universal coding language for the NHS.

At last - the secrets of Bletchley Park's powerful codebreaking computers. This is a history of Colossus, the world's first fully-functioning electronic digital computer. Colossus was used during the Second World War at the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, where it played an invaluable role cracking enemy codes. Until very recently, much about the Colossus machine was shrouded in secrecy, largely because the codes that were employed remained in use by the British security services until a short time ago. This book only became possible due to the declassification in the US of wartime documents. With an introductory essay on cryptography and the history of code-breaking by ...
