The Emergence and Development of SVO Patterning in Latin and French
This book analyzes--in terms of branching--the pervasive reorganization of Latin syntactic and morphological structures: in the development from Latin to French, a shift can be observed from the archaic, left-branching structures (which Latin inherited from Proto-Indo-European) to modern right-branching equivalents. Brigitte Bauer presents a detailed analysis of this development based on the theoretical discussion and definition of "branching" and "head." Subsequently she relates the diachronic shift to psycholinguistic evidence, arguing that the difficulty of LB complex structures as reflected in their painstaking and delayed acquisition accounts for the extensive typological shift from left to right branching that took place in Latin/French and the other Indo-European languages.
Language in Time and Space
The honoree of this Festschrift has for many years now marked modern trends in diachronic and synchronic linguistics by his own publications and by stimulating those of numerous others. This collection of articles presents data-oriented studies that integrate modern and traditional approaches in the field, thus reflecting the honoree's contribution to contemporary linguistics. Since early in its history, photography has been used by a diversity of travellers, whose collected photographs have been compiled into albums. But Photographic Travel as a genre of art did not appear before the second half of the twentieth century, and had a singular fate and fortune in the US as well as in Europe. The initial objective of some itinerant photographers is to make a book; their shooting practice is conditioned by this objective, as well as their travel experience. Their books – designed as one coherent hole – refer to their wandering experience, even though their stories are never completely free from fiction. In these books, their travels are converged, and their subjectivity is revealed. It is therefore relevant to call such books made of photographies, and possibly words about the travel experience, Photographic Travel books (comparably to Travel books). Danièle Méaux has tackled the task of characterizing this genre.

Syntax of the Sentence
This is the first of a multi-volume set dealing with the long-term evolution of Latin syntax, roughly from the 4th century BCE up to the 6th century CE. There are six pivotal chapters in this volume, each dealing with a subject which is critical to the understanding of the syntactic system. Topics covered include contact phenomena (from Greek and Semitic), the development of word order, particles, coordination, and the syntax of questions and answers. The volume is introduced by the editors in an explanatory "Prolegomena", and the textual parameters are set in a chapter on literary genres and sociolinguistics. Crafted in a functional-typological framework, chapters are user-sensitive, with a minimum of technical jargon and formalism, making them accessible to the widest range of readers.
