"Things can only be diverse and should be diverse," wrote Donald Judd in 1964 about the art scene in New York, and hence rejected a one-dimensional ordering of art history in favour of an open encounter with works of art.In this sense, the works in this experimental collection presentation are also set in relation to one another along with their specific local context: situational 'snapshots' from the 1960s in New York and Düsseldorf, to the 1980s in Cologne, and up to the 1990s in Berlin and Los Angeles, which are deepened and thought further in the accompanying essays of this exhibition catalogue.Published alongside the exhibition at Nationalgalerie Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (15 December 2018 - 29 September 2019).

Was ist Realität, was ist Repräsentation?

Eva Hesse’s later works are fascinating—not least because of her unusual materials Eva Hesse (1936–1970) is one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century. Born in Hamburg, she immigrated to New York via the Netherlands in 1938. Even though Hesse died of a brain tumor at the age of just thirty-four, she left behind a fascinating, highly individual body of work. In the mid-sixties she began experimenting with new materials that had never before been used to produce art objects, such as polyester, fiberglass, and latex. Hesse’s sculptures, which are now included in the collections of major museums around the world, are unique combinations of complex and occasionally contradictory qualities, such as hard and soft, fragile and substantial, abstract and figuratively evocative. This lavishly illustrated book concentrates on sculptures and drawings from the years 1966 to 1970, the last phase of the American artist’s work. -- Publisher’s description.

Jose Dávila

The force of gravity slows objects that move up and steadily accelerates those that move down. It is what causes bodies to be drawn to the surface of the Earth and that distant bodies such as planets and stars experience a force that holds them together and in motion. The sculptural work of Mexican artist Jose Dávila (*1974) draws on these forces and shows the solidity and fragility of pieces of stone and glass. Stone blocks that are one on another in a constant balance of weights, characterized by the rigidity and regularity of their structures. Dávila's works create a powerful interplay of fragility and strength, balance and equilibrium. The publication The Elephant and the Feather presents his sculptural works from 2014 to 2017 including the current show at the Kunsthalle Hamburg. Exhibition: Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (02.06.2017- 10.06.2018).

Dan Perjovschi. The Prize Book

Everything has a place in Perjovschi's universe. But nothing is constant. Just as our thoughts remain alive and virulent through movement, his drawings only form for a moment. Then they are painted over, rubbed out and fade.In 2016 Dan Perjovschi received the first Rosa Schapire art prize from Freunde der Hamburger Kunsthalle. This publication is based on the artist's sketchbook, augmented by installation photos of his accompanying exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.English and German text.

This book considers the history of Do It Yourself art, music and publishing, demonstrating how DIY strategies have transitioned from being marginal, to emergent, to embedded. Through secondary research, observation and 30 original interviews, each chapter analyses one of 15 creative cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dusseldorf, New York, London, Manchester, Cologne, Washington DC, Detroit, Berlin, Glasgow, Olympia (Washington), Portland (Oregon), Moscow and Istanbul) and assesses the contemporary situation in each in the post-subcultural era of digital and internet technologies. The book challenges existing subcultural histories by examining less well-known scenes as well as exploring DIY "best practices" to trace a template of best approaches for sustainable, independent, locally owned creative enterprises.
