This report provides examples and shares information about the types of initiatives that British Columbia municipalities have undertaken to increase the supply of affordable and special-needs housing. The first section contains information on approaches to housing planning and policies, including definitions of affordable housing, partnering with the community, and housing strategy document preparation. The second section reviews planning tools used by municipalities to achieve affordable housing, such as zoning and land use policies. The third section summarizes specific initiatives for individuals with special needs such as people who are disabled, mentally ill, or homeless. The appendix include a listing of various housing initiatives used by individual communities and contact telephone numbers.
