This volume contains the refereed and invited papers presented at Expert Systems 90, the tenth annual conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems, held in London in September 1990. The theme of the conference,"Business Benefits of Expert Systems," is particularly pertinent, as expert systems mature and begin to be applied in a much wider range of settings. This year three issues in particular were examined: cybernetics, databases, and programming languages. They reflect the ubiquity of expert systems and show how these methods are helping to expand other areas of technology. Hybrid Neural Systems
Hybrid neural systems are computational systems which are based mainly on artificial neural networks and allow for symbolic interpretation or interaction with symbolic components. This book is derived from a workshop held during the NIPS'98 in Denver, Colorado, USA, and competently reflects the state of the art of research and development in hybrid neural systems. The 26 revised full papers presented together with an introductory overview by the volume editors have been through a twofold process of careful reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: structured connectionism and rule representation; distributed neural architectures and language processing; transformation and explanation; robotics, vision, and cognitive approaches.
Rob Milne: A Tribute to a Pioneering AI Scientist, Entrepreneur and Mountaineer
Rob Milne was a remarkable man. He died of a heart attack on the 5th of June 2005 while climbing Mount Everest in Nepal. Milne (48) lived an active life: combining his three ‘careers’ seemingly effortlessly. He was a hi-tech entrepreneur, an AI researcher and a passionate mountaineer. Mount Everest was last on his list of the highest summits on each continent. He was only 400 meters from the top when he died. This publication commemorates and celebrates the life of Rob Milne. It covers all facets of Rob Milne's life and contains contributions by the people who have known him well and pay tribute to his life and his legacy. Rob Milne is survived by his wife Val and his two children Alex and Rosemary. After he died, his wife said in a radio interview: “Rob died at the top, doing what he loved.”
