With the Twenty-Third Symposium, we sustained the tradition of providing an informal, congenial atmosphere that our participants find conducive to pursuing technical discussion of program topics. The techni cal program consisted of six sessions with 38 oral presentations, a roundtable forum, two special topic discussions and a poster session con sisting of 230 posters. A special luncheon talk on "Natural Capitalism" by Karl Rabago of the Rocky Mountain Institute was particularly enlightening. More infor mation on these provocative approaches to resources and societal needs can be found at their website, www.rmi.org. While plant biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for enzy...
Annual Reports on Fermentation Processes, Volume 8 emphasizes the significant developments in fermentation processes. This book discusses the formation of protosomes with yeast proteins, kinetics of the inhibition of yeast growth and fermentation by ethanol, and bioseparation by cartridge chromatography. The concentration polarization and shear deactivation of protein during ultrafiltration/diafiltration and chromatographic purification of semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotics are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the regulation of cellulolytic activity, computer aids for teaching biotechnology, and steroid bioconversions. Other topics include the cellulose pretreatments and modeling of adsorption kinetics of cellulases in cellulose column. This volume is useful to students and researchers conducting work on fermentation research and developments.
This book presents research on biomass pretreatments, which are a fundamental part of bioethanol fuel production to make biomass more accessible. This book also includes an introductory section on the bioethanol fuels. Bioethanol Fuel Production Processes. I: Biomass Pretreatments is the first volume in the Handbook of Bioethanol Fuels (Six-Volume Set). The primary pretreatments at the macro level are the biological chemical, hydrothermal, and mechanical pretreatments of the biomass. It also has an introductory section on the biomass pretreatments at large for bioethanol fuel production. The major pretreatments at the micro level are the enzymatic and fungal pretreatments of the biomass as t...
This two-volume book on biomass is a reflection of the increase in biomass related research and applications, driven by overall higher interest in sustainable energy and food sources, by increased awareness of potentials and pitfalls of using biomass for energy, by the concerns for food supply and by multitude of potential biomass uses as a source material in organic chemistry, bringing in the concept of bio-refinery. It reflects the trend in broadening of biomass related research and an increased focus on second-generation bio-fuels. Its total of 40 chapters spans over diverse areas of biomass research, grouped into 9 themes.
This book provides an overview of the research on production processes for bioethanol fuels in general, hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass for bioethanol production, microbial fermentation of hydrolysates and substrates with yeasts for bioethanol production, and separation and distillation of bioethanol fuels from the fermentation broth, complementing the research on biomass pretreatments presented in the first volume. It presents an overview of the research on biomass hydrolysis in general, wood hydrolysis, straw hydrolysis, and cellulose hydrolysis for bioethanol fuel production in the first section for biomass hydrolysis. It provides an overview of the research on microbial hydrolysate ...
Renewable fuels, in the present times, have become important to curb emission of greenhouse gases, which are causing damage to the environment and leading to climatic changes. Ideally, their utilization can be a zero carbon operation. Planting suitable trees on all waste lands and agro forestry on a large scale can fulfil the needs of timber, fuel, fruits, etc. All kinds of lignocellulosic biomass can be converted by several methods to useful liquid fuels like alcohols, biodiesel, methane, renewable diesel and renewable gasoline. Hydrogen can be used as a renewable fuel because of its desirable characteristics and properties for its use as a green fuel.
This book provides an overview of research on the production of bioethanol fuels from waste feedstocks such as second-generation residual sugar and starch feedstocks, food waste, industrial waste, urban waste, forestry waste, and lignocellulosic biomass at large with 17 chapters. In this context, there are eight sections where the first two chapters cover the production of bioethanol fuels from waste feedstocks at large. This book is the fourth volume in the Handbook of Bioethanol Fuels (Six-Volume Set). It shows that pretreatments and hydrolysis of the waste feedstocks, fermentation of hydrolysates, and separation and distillation of bioethanol fuels are the fundamental processes for bioeth...
