Mountain warfare on the Isonzo River Valley resulted in almost two million casualties from avalanches, frostbite, malaria, cholera, as well as prisoner-of-war starvation. Using the attacco frontale the blood of the illiterate fanti was used as coin to purchase terrain pushing the enemy back leading to Vienna's request to Berlin for help, leading to Caporetto.
Walter Hampden
"Walter Hampden (1879-1955), born in Brooklyn, New York, was one of the giants of the twentieth-century American theatre and considered by many of his contemporaries to be the successor of Edwin Booth. After an apprenticeship in England, and his brilliant performances as Hamlet and Cyrano in New York, Hampden emerged as a major artist. Season after season he appeared on Broadway and toured from coast to coast with his own company, building a reputation for himself as one of the finest classical actors in the English-speaking world. When he retired from management, he continued to appear prominently on Broadway, television, and in films; on radio, as the fourth president of The Players, he was often introduced as the Dean of the American Theatre. Crime Fiction in German
Crime Fiction in German is the first volume in English to offer a comprehensive overview of German-language crime fiction from its origins in the early nineteenth century to its vibrant growth in the new millennium. As well as introducing readers to crime fiction from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the former East Germany, the volume expands the notion of a German crime-writing tradition by investigating Nazi crime fiction, Jewish-German crime fiction, Turkish-German crime fiction and the Afrika-Krimi. Significant trends, including the West German social crime novel, women’s crime writing, regional crime fiction, historical crime fiction and the Fernsehkrimi television crime drama are also explored, highlighting the genre’s distinctive features in German-language contexts. This volume includes a map of German-speaking Europe, a chronology of key crime publishing milestones, primary texts and trends, as well as an annotated bibliography of print and online resources in English and German.
Strategies of Adaptation in Tourist Communication
The papers in this volume study the relationship between language use and the concept of the “tourist gaze” through a range of communicative practices from different cultures and languages. From a pragmatic perspective, the authors investigate how language constantly adapts to contextual constraints which affect tourism discourse as a strategic meaning-making process that turns insignificant places into desirable tourist destinations. The case studies draw on both, in situ interactions with visitors, such as guided tours and counter information, old and new mediatized genres, i.e. guide books, travelogues, print advertising as well as TV-commercials, service web-sites and apps. Despite the diversity of data, one of the common findings in the volume is that staging the sensory ‘lived’ tourist experience is the lynchpin of all communicative practices. Hence, the use of tourism language reveals itself as the mirror of how ‘people on the move’ continuously enact as ‘tourists’ and ‘places’ are constructed as must-see ‘sights’.
