This book is a collection of reviews and essays about the recent developments in the area of Symmetries and applications of Group Theory. Contributions have been written mostly at the graduate level but some are accessible to advanced undergraduates. The book is of interest to a wide audience and covers a broad range of topics with a strong degree of thematical unity. The book is part of a Series of books on Symmetries in Science and may be compared to the published Proceedings of the Colloquia on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics. Here, however, prevails a distinguished character for presenting extended reviews on present applications to Science, not restricted to Theoretical Physics.

This Festschrift volume in honour of Prof. E R Caianiello contains invited papers of eminent scientists who have worked in the several areas to which Prof. Caianiello has given seminal contributions: quantum field theory, foundations of quantum mechanics and maximal acceleration (Vol. 1); neural nets, general systems theory and various topics of cybernetics (Vol. 2). The wide range of topics covered shows the fruitfulness of a higher unifying perspective on seemingly diverse subjects.
Imagination and Rigor
The aim of this volume of scientific essays is twofold. On the one hand, by remembering the scientific figure of Eduardo R. Caianiello, it aims at focusing on his outstanding contributions – from theoretical physics to cybernetics – which after so many years still represent occasion of innovative paths to be fruitfully followed. It must be stressed the contribution that his interdisciplinary methodology can still be of great help in affording and solving present day complex problems. On the other hand, it aims at pinpointing with the help of the scientists contributing to the volume – some crucial problems in present day research in the fields of interest of Eduardo Caianiello and which are still among the main lines of investigation of some of the Institutes founded by Eduardo (Istituto di Cibernetica del CNR, IIAS, etc).

All’ombra del Cervo di Rodi : le memorie della Fisica a Napoli nella Mostra d’Oltremare
Nell’area della Mostra d’Oltremare di Napoli si trovano edifici (appartenenti al nucleo storico originario o alla ricostruzione post-bellica) che richiedono interventi urgenti. Alcuni di questi edifici, per quasi cinquant’anni, sono stati testimoni di un periodo cruciale per lo sviluppo e la crescita della Scuola della Fisica napoletana. Ricercatori, docenti, studenti e personale tecnico-amministrativo, insieme a illustri premi Nobel e sofisticate apparecchiature per esperimenti internazionali, sono testimonianze di un passato straordinario, che va tutelato e valorizzato. È per questo che è nata l’Associazione “All’Ombra del Cervo di Rodi”, con l’obiettivo di promuovere ogni iniziativa utile al recupero e alla valorizzazione di questo patrimonio. Questo testo è un contributo sull’onda della memoria, che volge inevitabilmente lo sguardo al passato, ma senza mai perdere di vista il futuro, da perseguire con determinazione e impegno.
