An imaginative picture book with enchanting verse and whimsical illustrations journeying through the “galaxy” in a pregnant mother’s belly as she prepares to welcome her child into the world. As an expectant mother anxiously awaits the birth of her child, she envisions the mystical place her baby inhabits, dreaming of a colorful world where they dance, explore, and play. Rejoice in the magic and wonder of welcoming a child into the world while reflecting upon the infinite nature of a mother’s love with this charming story.
Intriguing collage illustrations frame this timeless story of a young child who questions the significance of color. Speaking in verse, the child wonders if the natural world believes any particular color to be more important than another. Does the rain think I'm a color when it falls on my head? I wonder if the clouds think I'm a color... maybe they think I'm green or blue or red. The child comes to see the importance of a world filled with and accepting of all colors. Do I have to choose one color? I want to be them all - black, blue, purple, brown, pink, orange, yellow, red, white, and green. The whole world is full of colors - just like me. Brynne Barnes earned a B.S. from the University of Michigan and a M.A. from Eastern Michigan University, and she teaches writing at Adrian College. This is her first picture book. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she writes books, poetry, and music.Annika M. Nelson's work crosses cultural borders, portraying images of everyday life. She has illustrated several books including Folk Wisdom of Mexico, in addition to illustrations for many national publications. She lives near San Diego, California.
Representing Black Girl Magic with Contemporary Picture Books explores how contemporary, culturally relevant, and responsive picture books can provide educators with a chance to teach about race and racism in the classroom. A wave of recently published picture books by Black women authors have pushed back against negative beliefs, countered negative stereotypes, and celebrated the joy and magic of Black girls and their families. Featuring the voices and perspectives of over two dozen Black women writers, in this book, Raphael Rogers examines how and why these publications are changing the picture book and the educational landscape. With sections on classroom connections and discussion questions in every chapter, this book is ideal for courses on teaching children’s literature and diversity in children’s literature.
This whimsical, rhyming tale whirls readers through all the fantastic things that can be found between the pages of a book. From a pirate adventure to a fairy fete, Books Do Not Have Wings explores all the wonderful things a book is that go way beyond its cover and pages.
This enduring anthem for Black girls celebrates their power, potential, and brilliance—for themselves and for the world. You are a thousand curls unfurling in your hair. You are a thousand fists standing proudly in air. You are the song of swallows, lifting sun as they sing— breaking light with their beaks, breaking sky with their wings . . . Black girlhood is beautiful! In this deeply moving celebration and rallying cry, and in the face of the many messages that still work to convince Black girls that they should shrink themselves, hide their light, know their place, Brynne Barnes and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh reclaim that narrative: A Black girl's place is everywhere, and her selfhood is ev...
