Geographic Information Science at the Heart of Europe
For the seventh consecutive year, the AGILE promotes the publication of a book collecting high-level scientific papers from unpublished fundamental scientific research in the field of Geographic Information Science. As the agenda for Europe 2020 is currently being set, this book demonstrates how geographic information science is at the heart of Europe. The contributions open perspectives for innovative services that will strengthen our European economy, and which will inform citizens about their environment while preserving their privacy. The latest challenges of spatial data infrastructures are addressed, such as the connection with the Web vocabularies or the representation of genealogy. User generated data (through social networks or through interactive cameras and software) is also an important breakthrough in our domain. A trend to deal more and more with time, events, ancient data, a nd activities is noticeable this year as well. This volume collects the 23 best full papers presented during the 16th AGILE Conference on Geographic Information Science, held between 14 and 17 May 2013 in Leuven, Belgium.

3D Geoinformation Science
Nowadays 3D Geoinformation is needed for many planning and analysis tasks. For example, 3D city and infrastructure models are paving the way for complex environmental and noise analyzes. 3D geological sub-surface models are needed for reservoir exploration in the oil-, gas-, and geothermal industry. Thus 3D Geoinformation brings together researchers and practitioners from different fields such as the geo-sciences, civil engineering, 3D city modeling, 3D geological and geophysical modeling, and, last but not least, computer science. The diverse challenges of 3D Geoinformation Science concern new approaches and the development of standards for above- and under-ground 3D modeling, efficient 3D data management, visualization and analysis. Finally, the integration of different 3D approaches and data models is seen as one of the most important challenges to be solved.

Un défi majeur pour l'homme est de se munir de représentations de l'espace dans lequel il vit qui dépassent la représentation que lui-même peut s'en construire afin d'agir en étant mieux informé. Ces représentations doivent être partageables afin que les décisions bénéficient d'une variété de points de vue. Alors que les cartes deviennent numériques et que leur analyse peut être partagée entre l'homme et l'ordinateur, demeurent des défis concernant la représentation des données numériques sur l'espace, l'acquisition et le traitement de ces données. Cet ouvrage présente des développements logiciels majeurs produits récemment en géomatique, discipline à la croisée de la géographie et de l'informatique et qui se concentre sur l'acquisition et le traitement des données sur l'espace. Il analyse les spécificités de ces logiciels en termes de motivations, de modélisation de l'information et de méthodes d'analyse.
