Artists of Invention
This volume presents a vivid portrait of the Bay Area art scene over the past century. More than 100 color illustrations of work by a wide range of artists are featured, including the renegade plein-air painters Society of Six, production ceramist Edith Heath, Bay Area figurative painter Richard Diebenkorn, studio ceramist Peter Voulkos, Minimalist John McCracken, conceptualist Dennis Oppenheim, photorealist Robert Bechtle and cultural commentator Squeak Carnwath. The book is further enriched by a contemporary section dedicated to work produced in the last 20 years by Kota Ezawa, Larry Sultan and Liz Cohen, among others. Published in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the California College of the Arts, the book accompanies an exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California. It includes artist biographies, essays by Nancy Boas, Glen Helfand, Tara McDowell and Peter Selz and texts by critic Arthur C. Danto and curator Matthew Higgs, among others.
Return Engagements
In Return Engagements artist and critic Việt Lê examines contemporary art in Cambodia and Việt Nam to rethink the entwinement of militarization, trauma, diaspora, and modernity in Southeast Asian art. Highlighting artists tied to Phnom Penh and Sài Gòn and drawing on a range of visual art as well as documentary and experimental films, Lê points out that artists of Southeast Asian descent are often expected to address the twin traumas of armed conflict and modernization, and shows how desirable art on these themes is on international art markets. As the global art market fetishizes trauma and violence, artists strategically align their work with those tropes in ways that Lê suggests allow them to reinvent such aesthetics and discursive spaces. By returning to and refashioning these themes, artists such as Tiffany Chung, Rithy Panh, and Sopheap Pich challenge categorizations of “diasporic” and “local” by situating themselves as insiders and outsiders relative to Cambodia and Việt Nam. By doing so, they disrupt dominant understandings of place, time, and belonging in contemporary art.

The Golden Decade
After World War II the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) in San Francisco hired renowned photographer Ansel Adams to establish one of the first fine art photography departments in the United States. The caliber of teachers and guest instructors assembled there under the new directorship of Douglas McAgy was unmatched, and the school was one of the most avant-garde art schools of its time. On hand were photographers Adams and Minor White, along with Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Lisette Model, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, and Homer Page. Three former students of Adams and White - William Heick, Ira H. Latour and C. Cameron Macauley, later known as the "Three Musketeers" - began planning a book that would focus on CSFA's photography department, covering the years between 1945 and 1955, the period known as "The Golden Decade." It was a lucky coincidence when Ken Ball and his wife Victoria Whyte Ball (whose father, Don Whyte, had bequeathed them an abundance of negatives and contact prints from his student years at CSFA) joined them. Together this team has embarked on an important journey into photography's past that is embodied in this book.
The Moment of Seeing
