Workshop on Branching Processes and Their Applications

One of the charms of mathematics is the contrast between its generality and its applicability to concrete, even everyday, problems. Branching processes are typical in this. Their niche of mathematics is the abstract pattern of reproduction, sets of individuals changing size and composition through their members reproducing; in other words, what Plato might have called the pure idea behind demography, population biology, cell kinetics, molecular replication, or nuclear ?ssion, had he known these scienti?c ?elds. Even in the performance of algorithms for sorting and classi?cation there is an inkling of the same pattern. In special cases, general properties of the abstract ideal then interact with the physical or biological or whatever properties at hand. But the population, or bran- ing, pattern is strong; it tends to dominate, and here lies the reason for the extreme usefulness of branching processes in diverse applications. Branching is a clean and beautiful mathematical pattern, with an intellectually challenging intrinsic structure, and it pervades the phenomena it underlies.

Current Trends in Dynamical Systems in Biology and Natural Sciences

This book disseminates the latest results and envisages new challenges in the application of mathematics to various practical situations in biology, epidemiology, and ecology. It comprises a collection of the main results presented at the Ninth Edition of the International Workshop “Dynamical Systems Applied to Biology and Natural Sciences – DSABNS”, held from 7 to 9 February 2018 at the Department of Mathematics, University of Turin, Italy. While the principal focus is ecology and epidemiology, the coverage extends even to waste recycling and a genetic application. The topics covered in the 12 peer-reviewed contributions involve such diverse mathematical tools as ordinary and partial differential equations, delay equations, stochastic equations, control, and sensitivity analysis. The book is intended to help both in disseminating the latest results and in envisaging new challenges in the application of mathematics to various practical situations in biology, epidemiology, and ecology.

Recent Developments in Modeling and Applications in Statistics

Statistics has been a main tool in almost every field of activity and an essential part of applied scientific work, supporting conclusions and offering insights into new uses for established methodologies, thus making it a valuable resource in looking for faceless facts. Model construction describing populations or phenomena subject to randomness use a wide range of methods. Data collection provides the basis for modelling and assumption verification. Modelling must be conducted using suitable techniques that give researchers the means to search for hidden facts or behaviours. This may be addressed by fitting pre-defined shapes and distributions to the data or by allowing the data to reveal its intrinsic properties by using nonparametric methods. This volume contains a selection of contributions presented at the XVIII Annual Congress of the Portuguese Statistical Society.

Introduction to Stochastic Differential Equations with Applications to Modelling in Biology and Finance

A comprehensive introduction to the core issues of stochastic differential equations and their effective application Introduction to Stochastic Differential Equations with Applications to Modelling in Biology and Finance offers a comprehensive examination to the most important issues of stochastic differential equations and their applications. The author — a noted expert in the field — includes myriad illustrative examples in modelling dynamical phenomena subject to randomness, mainly in biology, bioeconomics and finance, that clearly demonstrate the usefulness of stochastic differential equations in these and many other areas of science and technology. The text also features real-life s...

Advanced Statistical Methods for the Analysis of Large Data-Sets

The theme of the meeting was “Statistical Methods for the Analysis of Large Data-Sets”. In recent years there has been increasing interest in this subject; in fact a huge quantity of information is often available but standard statistical techniques are usually not well suited to managing this kind of data. The conference serves as an important meeting point for European researchers working on this topic and a number of European statistical societies participated in the organization of the event. The book includes 45 papers from a selection of the 156 papers accepted for presentation and discussed at the conference on “Advanced Statistical Methods for the Analysis of Large Data-sets.”

Nonlinear Stochastic Problems

This volume corresponds to the invited lectures and advanced research papers presented at the NATD Advanced Study Institute on Nonlinear Stochastic Problems with emphasis on Identification, Signal Processing, Control and Nonlinear Filtering held in Algarve (Portugal), on May 1982. The book is a blend of theoretical issues, algorithmic implementation aspects, and application examples. In many areas of science and engineering, there are problems which are intrinsically nonlinear 3nd stochastic in nature. Clear examples arise in identification and mOdeling, signal processing, nonlinear filtering, stochastic and adaptive conLrol. The meeting was organized because it was felt that there is a need for discussion of the methods and philosophy underlying these different areas, and in order to communicate those approaches that have proven to be effective. As the computational technology progresses, more general approaches to a number of problems which have been treated previously by linearization and perturbation methods become feasible and rewarding.

Biomathematics and Related Computational Problems

Biomathematics emerged and rapidly grew as an independent discipline in the late sixties as scientists with various backgrounds in the mathematical, biological and physical sciences gathered together to form Departments and Institutes centered around this discipline that many at that time felt should fall between the cracks of legitimate science. For various reasons some of these new institutions vanished in the mid-seventies, particularly in the U. S. , the main reason for their demise being economic. Nevertheless, good biomathematical so that the range research has been ceaselessly carried on by numerous workers worldwide of this activity appears now as truly impressive: from useful and ef...

This book provides a lively and accessible introduction to the numerical solution of stochastic differential equations with the aim of making this subject available to the widest possible readership. It presents an outline of the underlying convergence and stability theory while avoiding technical details. Key ideas are illustrated with numerous computational examples and computer code is listed at the end of each chapter. The authors include 150 exercises, with solutions available online, and 40 programming tasks. Although introductory, the book covers a range of modern research topics, including Itô versus Stratonovich calculus, implicit methods, stability theory, nonconvergence on nonlin...
