Analysing Variation in English
Analysing Variation in English brings together a range of perspectives on the collection, analysis and broader relevance of variable language data. In the first half of the book, the focus is firmly on the description and comparison of methods for collecting and analysing examples of variation in language. Novel quantitative and computational methods are introduced and exemplified alongside more traditional approaches. The innovative second half of the book establishes and tests the relevance of language variation to other aspects of linguistics such as language change, and to other disciplines such as law and education. Each chapter concludes with a 'Where next?' section, providing guidance on further reading, but also pointers to under-researched areas, designed to help identify good topics for projects and dissertations. Discourse, of Course comes after Jan Renkema’s Introduction to Discourse Studies (2004) for undergraduates. The new book is a collection of twenty short papers. It is a capita selecta course and meant for graduate programs. The aim of this book is threefold: • to present material for advanced courses in discourse studies; • to unfold a stimulating display of research projects to future PhD students; • to give an overview of new developments after the 2004 Introduction to Discourse Studies. This publication fulfills both the teacher's need for a state-of-the-art overview of the main topics in discourse, and the student's need to acquire standards for developing research plans in theses and dissertations. It gives a combination of approaches from very different schools in discourse studies, ranging from argumentation theory to genre theory, from the study of multimodal metaphors to cognitive approaches to coherence analysis. Style Guide for Voting System Documentation
This style guide is a product of the voting system standards and test methods research at NIST. The most recent version of the tech. standard, the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines of Aug. 2007, contains requirements for the usability of documentation used by poll workers and election support staff. The approach to testing these requirements has two components: (1) Style guide incorporating best practices for voting system documentation; (2) Test protocol for voting system test labs. to use to measure the usability of instructions supplied by voting system manufacturers for election workers. This style guide sets out guidelines for voting system manufacturers to use to implement best practices in their documentation for poll workers and election support staff.
