Gender analysis of development focuses on gender relations, rather than women and men as separate gender categories, but it has necessarily been women-orientated in its concerns with subordination. This work moves gender analysis towards a fuller understanding of men's diverse gendered identities, and how these are implicated in their everyday working lives in developing country contexts. The questions addressed in the papers range from conceptual and methodological issues of definitions and measurement of men's work, to case studies of working men in specific settings, but all are concerned with the recognition of gendered vulnerabilities of (some) men as men, as well as with a re-thinking of gender relations in the light of consideration of the subjectivities of specific groups of men.

Livelihoods in rural Africa are changing in response to disappearing job prospects, falling agricultural output and collapsing infrastructure. This book explains why the responses to these challenges are so different in different parts of Africa. Making a Living uses case studies from commercial farming regions in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe and from much poorer areas within eastern and southern Africa.to give a broad comparative study of rural livelihoods. These case studies reveal how household relations, poverty and gender all play a part in the changing political economy of rural Africa.

Sacred Custodians of the Earth?

These 13 workshop-based papers critique ecofeminist assumptions about traditional societies viewing women as closer to nature and more spiritual than men. Following an overview by Low (history, Open U.) and Tremayne (social and cultural anthropology, U. of Oxford), the first contribution frames the debate over gender politics and environmentalism. Next, case studies illustrate sacred landscape (not intrinsically ecologically-oriented) in such societies past and present. Part III treats nature and gender in several major world religions. The final paper discusses contemporary paganism's quest for wholeness. The cover title reads Women as sacred custodians of the earth? Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Marriage, Love, Caste and Kinship Support

The book helps to understand the marital experiences of people most of whom belong to the Scheduled Caste. The author describes the shifts within their marriages, remarriages and other kinds of unions and their striking diversities. An important contribution of the book lies in the unfolding of the role of women-led informal courts and their influence in conflict resolution. This takes place in a distinctly different mode of community-based arbitration against the backdrop of mainstream legal structures and male-dominated caste associations.
