Celia and Deane Clark's Portsmouth
Celia was lucky enough to marry Deane Clark and thereby gain a home town, his birthplace. As living organisms, cities continually change - but whether all changes in Portsmouth were for the better is still debated. Living in there since 1970, they have seen Portsmouth change - rapidly at first during the 'Second Blitz' - new roads, slum clearance and comprehensive redevelopment, and then more slowly as conservation areas, general improvement areas and creative reuse of buildings took hold. The photos presented here are a mixture of old and new.

The diaries of Ossie Clark, one of the most influential names in post-war British fashion. He created exquisite and outrageous costumes for the famous of London, New York, Paris and Rome, many of whom became his friends: Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg, Twiggy, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Andy Warhol. At the peak of his career he enjoyed superstar status (Hockney painted him in 1971). He was the archetypal flawed genius, living a jet-set life for ten years, but finally falling due to his lack of business acumen and his undisciplined talent. He was bankrupt by the early 1980s and his marraige to Celia Birtwell, Hockney's muse, had foundered because of his affairs with men. In his last few years he became interested in Buddhism and lived in a small council flat in Holland Park where he was murdered by his lover in 1996.
London Blues
Nobby Clark is well-known for his theater photographs. This, however, is a more personal project, the result of carrying a small camera around the streets of London for over forty years, “Taking photos of my town—its people, buildings, the river . . . it changes every day. London is my Landscape.” London Blues was published alongside a major exhibition at the National Theatre. The photographs from the book will make their US debut at Tribeca Arches in New York, and will be on view from November 18 to December 20, 2008.
