Combinatory Linguistics
The book examines to what extent the mediating relation between constituents and their semantics can arise from combinatory knowledge of words. It traces the roots of Combinatory Categorial Grammar, and uses the theory to promote a Humean question in linguistics and cognitive science: Why do we see limited constituency and dependency in natural languages, despite their diversity and potential infinity? A potential answer is that constituents and dependencies might have arisen from a single resource: adjacency. The combinatory formulation of adjacency constrains possible grammars.

Dependency Structures and Lexicalized Grammars
Since 2002, FoLLI has awarded an annual prize for outstanding dissertations in the fields of Logic, Language and Information. This book is based on the PhD thesis of Marco Kuhlmann, joint winner of the E.W. Beth dissertation award in 2008. Kuhlmann’s thesis lays new theoretical foundations for the study of non-projective dependency grammars. These grammars are becoming increasingly important for approaches to statistical parsing in computational linguistics that deal with free word order and long-distance dependencies. The author provides new formal tools to define and understand dependency grammars, presents two new dependency language hierarchies with polynomial parsing algorithms, establishes the practical significance of these hierarchies through corpus studies, and links his work to the phrase-structure grammar tradition through an equivalence result with tree-adjoining grammars. The work bridges the gaps between linguistics and theoretical computer science, between theoretical and empirical approaches in computational linguistics, and between previously disconnected strands of formal language research.
Breadth and Depth of Semantic Lexicons
Most of the books about computational (lexical) semantic lexicons deal with the depth (or content) aspect of lexicons, ignoring the breadth (or coverage) aspect. This book presents a first attempt in the community to address both issues: content and coverage of computational semantic lexicons, in a thorough manner. Moreover, it addresses issues which have not yet been tackled in implemented systems such as the application time of lexical rules. Lexical rules and lexical underspecification are also contrasted in implemented systems. The main approaches in the field of computational (lexical) semantics are represented in the present book (including Wordnet, CyC, Mikrokosmos, Generative Lexicon). This book embraces several fields (and subfields) as different as: linguistics (theoretical, computational, semantics, pragmatics), psycholinguistics, cognitive science, computer science, artificial intelligence, knowledge representation, statistics and natural language processing. This book presents a new paradigm of natural language grammar analysis, based on adposition as the key concept, considered a general connection between two morphemes – or group of morphemes.
