"This book evolved from an event entitled 'Global PhD and Researchers Colloquium on Disability Law & Policy' organised by the Centre for Disability Law and Policy in NUI Galway in April 2010"--Introduction.
This volume undertakes a multidisciplinary examination of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It brings together an emerging community of scholars in the disability field whose pioneering research examines the significance of the Convention and the barriers to its operationalisation and implementation. This book will provide novel perspectives on the Convention under a number of different themes. The themes include legal capacity, mental health, independent living, education, and employment and the intersectionality of disability. The book also takes a regional look at the Convention and the role that the Convention will play in developing disability law and policy in those regions. These themes are of huge importance for policy makers, non-governmental organisations, disability persons' organisations and State Parties to the Convention.
"The official Air Corps designation for the B-26 medium bomber was the Martin Marauder, but the plane was better known as the Widow Maker. The B-26 was a 'hot' aircraft being flown by low time pilots, and its safety record in training was lethal ... Charles O'Mahony flew 71 combat missions in the Widow Maker, 27 of them as squadron or group lead ... [This book] is the story of nine of Charles O'Mahony's missions, when he found himself a wing span from disaster"--P. [4] of cover.

With international human rights under challenge, this book represents a comprehensive critique that adds a social policy perspective to recent political and legalistic analysis. Expert contributors draw on local and global examples to review constructs of universal rights and their impact on social policy and human welfare. With thorough analysis of their strengths, weaknesses and enforcement, it sets out their role in domestic and geopolitical affairs. For those with an interest in social policy, ethics, politics and international relations, this is an honest appraisal of both the concepts of international human rights and their realities.
