Threat to the Yangtze River Dolphin

Yangtze River dolphins, also known as Baiji, have splashed in the waters of Chinas Yangtze River for millions of years. The Chinese people have always loved these mammals. They considered the Baiji to be a beautiful part of their river, and they have told many stories about them. Today, the Yangtze is a very different place. Trash floats in the water, and toxic chemicals pollute it. Thousands of boats travel up and down the river every day, and people use dangerous fishing equipment with sharp rolling hooks. The Yangtze River is no longer a safe place for the Baiji to live. Most of them have died out. Scientists worry that it might be too late for these dolphins. Is there any way to save them?

The tragic recognition of the extinction of the Yangtze River Dolphin or baiji in 2007 became a major news story and sent shockwaves around the world. It made a romantic story, for the baiji was a unique and beautiful creature that features in many Chinese legends and folk tales. The Goddess of the Yangtze, as it was known, was also the lone representative of an entire and ancient branch of the Tree of Life. But perhaps the greater tragedy is that its status as one of the world's most threatened mammals had been widely recognized, yet despite wide publicity virtually no international funds became available. A compelling read by a young naturalist, Samuel Turvey tells the story of the plight ...

The Chinese River Dolphin Lipotes vexillifer (or Baiji) is one of the world's rarest freshwater cetaceans, with a population of only 200 remaining worldwide. It occurs only along a 1600 kilometre stretch of the Yangtze River, where it has been affected over the past decades by industrial and agricultural pollution, river traffic, and especially by fishing. The Department of River Dolphin Research has adopted a threefold approach to Baiji conservation: a) studies for captive breeding and reproductive biology, b) re-establishing of refuges for captive breeding, and c), the establishing of semi-natural reserves. Studies have been carried out since the 1970s, and refuges have been established in the 1980s.Recently, steps have been undertaken to establish the first Baiji reserve in Swan Oxbow Lake. "The baiji/Chinese river Dolphin/Yangtze River Dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer) was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1989. The Office of Protected Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service has completed a 5-year of the status of the species. A 5-year review is a periodic analysis of a species' status conducted to ensure that the listing classification of a species as threatened or endangered on the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants (List) (50 CFR 17.11 - 17.12) is accurate. The 5- year review is required by section 4(c)(2) ofthe Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA) and was prepared pursuant to the joint National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife 5 year Review Guidance and template (USFWS and NMFS 2006). The NMFS Office of Protected Resources led the 5-year review. We relied on peer-reviewed publications, and government and technical reports. We gathered information through September 2017"--Page 1.
