The book is distinguished from previous publications by focusing on assessment issues in the context of world Englishes. This topic is an important part of recent research in linguistics. This volume can be used as a source and reference for teachers and researchers in the field. It is valuable as it presents a number of case studies from different linguistic contexts. It provides insights into the use of new ways of assessment, and suggests some methods of assessment that should be used in multilingual settings to evaluate the different styles of learners with different local norms.
This collection revises subjectivity in the light of postmodern theories of the subject. The contributors gathered here present and discuss a number of different, but interrelated, subjectivities. As such, they reconceptualize the theory of subjectivity according to various texts and contexts, such as the subjectivity of discourses, the subject under subjugation, and the intersubjective construction of the other. It introduces a dynamic subjectivity to minority literature, colonial/postcolonial texts, and travel literature, to name but a few. The dynamics of intersubjectivity provide a space for subjectivities to negotiate and interrelate. Moreover, this collection shows that intersubjectivity is hybrid, yet flexible, by nature.
This collection of essays aims to revise genre theory and studies. Authors in this volume present and discuss different literary genres in transition. They investigate genre hybridization, transformation, reconciliation and evolution. Therefore, the volume reconceptualizes the theory according to novel texts and contexts in, for example, trans-generic film series, feminine poetry, and Arab women writing. It introduces new generic labels in travel literature and new sub-genres in Maghrebean literature. Genre blurs the boundaries between genre hierarchy, labels, and borderlines. We read a gothic text that encompasses trauma, testimony, resistance and history. Moreover, scholars contributing to this collection astutely point out that genres are hybrid yet flexible by nature. They adopt a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to genre theory. The volume targets researchers, theorists and students reading and interpreting literary and historical texts alongside genre theory.
The contributions gathered in this volume bear witness to the fact that belonging is a multi-faceted concept that necessitates different and shifting idioms of expression. It continually requires reconsideration and redefinition of our affiliations in response to the rapid social, cultural, and political changes of our world. The literary paradigms, linguistic practices, and cultural formations of belonging testify to the impossibility of confining it to conventional and established structures of knowledge. The different reflections on belonging introduced in this book are instrumental in reassessing and remodelling the general assumptions that have informed its definition and representation. The current global reality and the self-other encounter make inevitable the continuous search for new forms of belonging that are in tune with one’s evolving and changing sense of self. Theoretically informed by and substantially grounded in lively and heated debates on cultural identity and belonging, this book proposes new critical directions in understanding national and transnational belonging.
Thanks to the ICT economy, today's world is witnessing a gradual process of transfer and displacement from a society based on the production of man-made material goods to a new society driven by science and knowledge. This new society uses human intelligence to try to solve cultural problems, to sustain activities, to rationalize performances, and to plan, program and develop strategies and projects for the future. This book therefore proposes a multi-faceted framework through which contemporary art, biology, digital science, geology, technology, physiology, chemistry, and philosophy enter into debate and complement each other. It is structured around a number of logically interconnected questions, such as: “What is bio-art?”, “Can a laboratory artist manipulate living beings, perform complex hybridizations, and give birth to chimeras that would coexist with human beings?”, “Do we have the right to use them?”, “Should we authorize research that will allow the development of these techniques, prohibit such research, or fund it?”, and, “Do we have the right to create embryos for transplantation or injection?”
