Abstract: The latest phase of Vitamin D research is comprehensively reviewed. During the past decade it has beendiscovered that vitamin D is the precursor of a new steroid hormone which controls the translocation of calcium through the cells of intestine, bones and kidney. The chemistry of vitamin D and its metabolites is presented, followed by an extensive survey of the function of vitamin D metabolites inintestine and bone. The clinical implications and future directions of vitamin D research conclude this technical biochemical compendium.

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble prohormones, the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 (or ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol). Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements, is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylation reactions to be activated in the body. Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D found in the body. Its major role is to increase the flow of calcium into the bloodstream, by promoting absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food in the intestines, and reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys. It is also necessary for bone growth and bone remodelling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. This book examines the biochemical components of vitamin D and the nutritional benefits it offers the human body.

When sunlight strikes skin it creates vitamin D, and without this nutrient we get weak and sick, are at risk of cancer and lupus, get osteoporosis and get depressed. The scientific literature shows that millions of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D isn't patentable. No one sends out drug reps to sell it to your doctor. So the deficiency that you likely have is probably undiagnosed.
