What makes a man write about the the binding of Isaac? His conviction that the center of such stories cuts much deeper than the knife wielded by the father. The blade digs into the unconscious, into sublimated experiences of humanity. In explaining child sacrifice we make plain our answers to questions we are afraid to ask without the veneer of this narrative subject. Contained in this book are some of these answers, mediated through retellings of this one event. The assumptions of the ancients are exposed in their explanations of the Binding of Isaac. The power differential between father and son makes the inheritance of faith, "truths," and authority a tenuous affair. In this new world we have entered violence must be decoupled from religion. The world cries out for continual re-interpretation of those stories that we find our foundation in.

Pastor Chris does some really neat Bible Studies; when he taught one on the gospel stories that are unique to Luke, I thought he should write a book about it. He said yes, if I include my thought in it as well. The Young Pastor-Pastor Chris Halverson is currently the Pastor of St. Stephen Lutheran, South Plainfield, NJ. He came here directly from Seminary at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Before that he was a Missionary in England and did an M. Phil. in Intertestamental Studies at the University of Cambridge (St. Edmund's College). The Not So Young Parishioner-Linda Nietman, a life long Lutheran is a retired Navy Nurse. She worked at the bedside and as a nursing instructor for 25 years. While she at one time considered the ministry, she had found her true calling as a nurse and as an active parishioner.

Christopher's Contemporary Catechism

Why a Contemporary Catechism? Even if you never had to memorize Luther's Small Catechism, you probably remember one of the most common phrases found inside, "What does this mean?" One of the apocryphal stories about this question is that Luther's son, Hans, constantly asked this question of Luther every time he theologized too far into the clouds. The Lutheran faith became grounded in answering this boy's questions. In a similar vein, I started up a summer sermon series-20 Questions in 10 weeks. It seemed to me that one of the dangers of preaching every week from the lectionary was that my theology could miss the mark, not because it was wrong, but because it could get too far into the clouds. And so, the members of St. Stephen humored me the spring before I started this series, by filling our question box with question. In doing this they helped plant my preaching on firm ground. The first year was so well received I did it a second and third year, ending up with 19 sermons total. 19 sermons applying Lutheran Theology and my own pastoral sensibility to 25 questions from my congregation. I hope and pray our wrestling with these questions may be helpful for you, dear reader.

Minister's Prayer Book

Since it first appeared in print in 1959, John Doberstein's Minister's Prayer Book has been a devotional classic among Lutheran pastors. Written by a pastor for other pastors, Doberstein's work recognizes the need for the pastor to drink from a well of rich resources to sustain the spiritual vitality needed to serve faithfully in parish ministry. The fact that this manual of devotion is still available more than fifty years later is a testament to the timelessness of the collection Doberstein gathered, as well as to his own pastoral acumen. Other than a minor revision made in 1986 by Philip Pfatteicher to update the propers, there has been no attempt to bring fresh material to Doberstein's work, no attempt to update it for a new generation. Until now. This revised edition recognizes the increasingly diverse face of clergy. New resources--prayers and readings written by women, people of color, and Christians from around the world--give the collection a broader appeal. The beauty of the Minister's Prayer Book is its intentional re-centering of the pastor's calling on word and sacrament, on pastoral care, and on being fully present and engaged in the lives of God's people.

Discourse Theory and Political Analysis

How can recent developments in post-structuralist, post-Marxist, and psychoanalytical theory actually inform ongoing empirical research? What are the appropriate methods and research strategies for conducting research in discourse theory and analysis? How can concepts such as hegemony, identity, the imaginary, dislocation, and empty signifiers illuminate key aspects of contemporary society and politics? This pathbreaking and multi-focal book contains a clear introductory statement of the theoretical approach used, and concludes with an assessment of the future directions of discourse theory in the social sciences.
