English as a Lingua Franca in Higher Education
With English-medium higher education burgeoning in Europe and elsewhere outside the English-speaking world, this book is the first to offer an ethnographically-embedded analysis of such classroom discourse by taking cognizance of English functioning as a lingua franca (ELF) in international student groups. Ugandan English
Ugandan English is a variety that has scarcely been noticed in past research. This timely volume brings together African and European scholars in a first-ever collection of articles that offer comprehensive discussions of the historical and present-day sociolinguistics of English in Uganda and fine-grained analyses of the structural characteristics of and attitudes to this hitherto largely unknown variety. Using rich archive, corpus, and interview data as well as ethnographic and observational methods, the various contributions paint a comprehensive picture of Ugandan English as distinct from other East African Englishes and as characterized by nativisation despite a still strong exonormative orientation, reflecting the modern nation’s status as a post-protectorate under the influence of globalisation. Apart from advancing our understanding of Ugandan English itself, the individual chapters contribute to theoretical debates on language contact and variation as regards the influence of substrate languages, founder populations, language ideologies and socio-economic factors.

Reflexive constructions in the world's languages
This landmark publication brings together 28 papers on reflexive constructions in languages from all continents, representing very diverse language types. While reflexive constructions have been discussed in the past from a variety of angles, this is the first edited volume of its kind. All the chapters are based on original data, and they are broadly comparable through a common terminological framework. Rethinking Sequentiality
This book addresses current approaches to sequentiality in pragmatics and discourse analysis. It reflects the current moves in ethnomethodological conversation analysis and speech act theory to cross methodological borders to arrive at a conception of a sequence, which extends the local notion of sequentiality by integrating further constitutive components, such as cognition, intentionality, activity type, culture and genre. The individual contributions were presented at the 7th IPrA Conference held in Budapest in the year 2000. They range from critical analyses of speech act theory and cognitive pragmatics to detailed micro analyses of genre- and activity-specific constraints on the production and interpretation of meaning. The first part sequences in theory and practice: minimal and unbounded discusses the theoretical premises and exemplifies these by detailed data analyses. The second part sequences in discourse: the micro-macro interface examines genre-specific constraints on individual sequences and shows the benefits of supplementing the microanalytic concept of sequentiality with macroanalytic categories.
