Old Kent

Upshur County, West Virginia was created in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties. Upshur's early history and the lives of its more prominent pioneers and nineteenth-century Native Sons are ably captured in this tripartite volume. Part I, a condensed history of the state prepared by Hu Maxwell, ranges over everything from the first explorations of the Blue Ridge, the French and Indian War, and the Revolution to West Virginia geography and geology, formation of the state, and the Civil War in West Virginia. In Part II, Mr. Cutright lays out the history of the county, with emphasis on the Indian Wars, religious life, geography, formation of the county and its political and government...

Beyond the Hero’s Journey

Telling a story is simple, right? You take a ‘hero’ and send them on a ‘journey’. There’s a beginning, middle and an end. But what if your story doesn’t fit into that basic structure? In Beyond the Hero’s Journey, BAFTA award–winning screenwriter Anthony Mullins presents an accessible, versatile and highly visual alternative to writing that dramatically expands the range of narratives open to writers, both emerging and experienced. Fun and easy-to-use, this book looks at much-loved films from around the world, including Moonlight, Lady Bird, The Social Network, The Godfather, A Fantastic Woman, Mulholland Drive, Shoplifters, Amour, Inside Llewyn Davis and Call Me By Your Name...

Colonial Chesapeake Families British Origins and Descendants

This history began as a small pedigree assembled as a birthday gift for my late father-in-law, Colonel Henry Perkins Gantt (1894-1983) of Holly Rod, Gloucester Point, Virginia, on his 72nd birthday, 29 April 1966. With continued research over the past 47 years, it has grown to encompass the history of nearly the complete descendants of Thomas Gantt (ca. 1634-1692), transported to Maryland in 1654, and his second wife, Ann Fielder (ca. 1662-1726), through at least the first six generations, and, in many lines, extending down through the eighth and succeeding ones as well. In a project of this enormous size and scope, there are bound to be errors and omissions that the author leaves to future historians of the family to correct, as well as to extend and continue the narrative. Where critical, probative information is sourced to original archives, but the sheer volume of data makes this by necessity incomplete.

The Poetry of Eavan Boland

"Pilar Villar-Argáiz's sustained, meticulous, and exacting study of Eavan Boland opens up and articulates in a fresh way the key dimensions of her poetry. It succeeds not only in tracking the far-reaching ramifications of Eavan Boland's politicized aesthetic as a postcolonial writer but in urging us to revisit the crystalline and precisely etched poems of one of the most significant artists in contemporary Irish culture." Professor Anne Fogarty, University College, Dublin (from the Introduction) This monograph is an original and important contribution to the growing body of critical studies devoted to one of Ireland's major living poets: Eavan Boland (see Haberstroh 1996; Hagen & Zelman 200...

Americans of Royal Descent

A standard work on royal genealogy, this collection contains nearly 200 pedigrees showing the lineal descent of hundreds of American families from the kings of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and France. The data derives from authoritative reference works, from family histories, and from manuscript pedigrees held in both public and private repositories. The indexes contain references to upwards of 3,000 surnames, many with multiple entries. One need only trace a surname through a lineage to connect with the Blood Royal. (Earlier editions of this work are not necessarily superseded by the seventh edition, but the seventh is held to be the most authoritative, and is therefore the most popular.)
