Growing up in the 1950s and 60s in a small upstate NY city, the author has interacted with many of the communitys leading lights, and has lots of stories to tell, and reminiscences to share. It could be a book about anywhere USA, and in reading the compendium of columns, the reader will get to know people they dont know, and will feel as if they did know them. John Sullivan is good at giving eulogies, and good at telling stories, particularly about people he has known and admired. Each brief biographical sketch gives you not only an understanding of the person and their times, but a feel for the contributions their lives made in the overall quality of life in their communities. New York Folks
NEW YORK FOLKS narrates the saga of Sure-Lite Brands Corporation, a producer of matches founded in 1893 by Hiram Ryder, a blacksmith's apprentice. Sure-Lite evolves, after a public offering in 1965, into a Fortune 200 NYSE listed corporation with CARSON'S a high growth retailer in the Home Center industry developing into Sure-Lite's principal business. A major power struggle erupts between the Ryder brothers for control of the company. Their struggle attracts predators, ambitious operating executives, slippery investment bankers, and corporate knaves, along with easy and hard ladies sporting high heels and sharp elbows. The narrative is brim with board of directors meeting conflicts, and self minded men and women who occasionally find themselves in foreign bedrooms. They are New York folks. Heini (Henry) Sali (1690-1765) married Mariah Von Arx and immigrated in 1735 from Zeglingen, Switzerland to Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. A History of the Salley Family 1690-1965, is a genealogy of Heini and MariahOs descendants, sons Henry Salley Jr. and Martin Salley, who, emigrated with their parents from Switzerland. These two sons subsequently settled in the area of Salley, S.C. and their descendants are prominent among the peoples of Salley, and other areas of Aiken County, as well as North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Georgia, Louisiana and the world. Olin Jones Sally spent many years compiling this comprehensive book which was published by the Salley Family Historical Committee after his death. The second edition corrects minor typographical errors only. Not covered in this genealogy is Heini SaliOs third son, John. Born in Orangeburgh in 1740, he remained in the Orangeburgh town area, and the many Salleys of Orangeburg are primarily descended from him.
