The study considers two generations of Anglo-Indian women in post-colonial India, and their social interaction with their community. It explores Anglo-Indian women as part of a cultural whole and as participants in the mainstream cultural claims of India. It notably highlights the marginalisation of Anglo-Indian women in decision-making, focusing on the multiple patriarchal dominations they face, and how it impacts on their role within society. It argues that the historical gendering of the Anglo-Indian community has concrete consequences in terms of familial, cultural and organizational links with the diaspora, perceptions and attitudes of other Indian communities towards the Anglo-Indian community in schools, neighborhoods and workplaces and significant discriminations based on colour of skin, economic resources and conformity to gender stereotypes. Examining how different forms of race, class and gender discrimination intersect in the lives and experiences of Anglo-Indian women, this work provides insights into contemporary gender relations in India, and is a key read for scholars in gender and sociology, as well as minority and diaspora studies.

Statistical data and evidence-based claims are increasingly central to our everyday lives. Critically examining ‘Big Data’, this book charts the recent explosion in sources of data, including those precipitated by global developments and technological change. It sets out changes and controversies related to data harvesting and construction, dissemination and data analytics by a range of private, governmental and social organisations in multiple settings. Analysing the power of data to shape political debate, the presentation of ideas to us by the media, and issues surrounding data ownership and access, the authors suggest how data can be used to uncover injustices and to advance social progress.

Debrett's Peerage & Baronetage 2008

The extraordinary life of Australia's first international racehorse, from creating new records in Australia to his life in California, where he won the Hollywood Gold Cup In wartime Sydney, a small and weedy racehorse kicked his way through the top tier of Australian racing. He was Shannon, one of the fastest horses the nation had ever seen. Between 1943 and 1947, Shannon broke record after record with his garrulous jockey Darby Munro. When they sensationally lost the Epsom Handicap by six inches, they forever were stamped by the race they didn't win. Sold in August 1947 for the highest price ever paid at auction for an Australian thoroughbred, Shannon ended up in America. Through headline-s...
