Serenata and Festa Teatrale in 18th Century Europe
This volume is dedicated to "Serenata and Festa Teatrale in 18th Century Europe", especially to the production of this music-dramatic genre at the courts on the Iberian Peninsula, in Italy, and the Holy Roman Empire where it was an integral part of court ceremonials and a privileged ritual of repraesentatio maiestatis. The 16 studies on patrons and artists, exceptional events and local traditions, reveal highly interesting material for the research on these up to now largely neglected genre. Any approach to these works full of metaphors, symbols and allusions has to take into account the context of the celebration and the resulting multiplicity of aspects: choice of themes, dramaturgical forms, textual and musical structures, vocal and instrumental ensembles, and the various options regarding the stage apparatus. "Serenata and Festa Teatrale in 18th Century Europe", edited by Iskrena Yordanova (Lisbon) and Paologiovanni Maione (Naples), inaugurates the series "Cadernos de Queluz", a subseries of "Specula Spectacula" by Don Juan Archiv Wien.

Architecture as Civil Commitment: Lucio Costa's Modernist Project for Brazil
Architecture as Civil Commitment analyses the many ways in which Lucio Costa shaped the discourse of Brazilian modern architecture, tracing the roots, developments, and counter-marches of a singular form of engagement that programmatically chose to act by cultural means rather than by political ones. Split into five chapters, the book addresses specific case-studies of Costa’s professional activity, pointing towards his multiple roles in the Brazilian federal government and focusing on passages of his work that are much less known outside of Brazil, such as his role inside Estado Novo bureaucracy, his leadership at SPHAN, and his participation in UNESCO’s headquarters project, all the way to the design of Brasilia. Digging deep into the original documents, the book crafts a powerful historical reconstruction that gives the international readership a detailed picture of one of the most fascinating architects of the 20th century, in all his contradictory geniality. It is an ideal read for those interested in Brazilian modernism, students and scholars of architectural and urban planning history, socio-cultural and political history, and visual arts.

I Florio
Il libro ricostruisce la storia di una delle più importanti famiglie italiane: quella dei Florio, il cui nome rievoca imprese formidabili sia sotto il profilo imprenditoriale che mondano e sportivo. Partendo dagli inizi dell’Ottocento delle prime imprese economiche, questo saggio rigoroso, restio a ogni concessione agiografica e romanzesca ma con un passo narrativo intrigante, attraversa la vicenda di questa famiglia fino al suo tramonto, nei primi decenni del Novecento. A questa dinastia è anche legata la nascita di una delle corse automobilistiche più importanti del mondo: quella Targa Florio che – iniziata nel 1906 e terminata nel 1977 – è fra le più antiche competizioni del secolo scorso. Una storia nella storia, che aggiunge fascino a un mosaico composto da molte tessere, compresa quella probabilmente più luccicante di Donna Franca, la “regina” della dinastia.
