Hardware and Software Architectures for Fault Tolerance
Fault tolerance has been an active research area for many years. This volume presents papers from a workshop held in 1993 where a small number of key researchers and practitioners in the area met to discuss the experiences of industrial practitioners, to provide a perspective on the state of the art of fault tolerance research, to determine whether the subject is becoming mature, and to learn from the experiences so far in order to identify what might be important research topics for the coming years. The workshop provided a more intimate environment for discussions and presentations than usual at conferences. The papers in the volume were presented at the workshop, then updated and revised to reflect what was learned at the workshop.
Interconnection Networks
Most of the articles in this book deal with static or point-to-point Interconnection Networks. In particular, new constructions are proposed based on different tools from discrete mathematics. Many new records have been established in the table of the maximum number of vertices of graphs with maximum degree &Dgr; and diameter D. Properties of these networks (and of more classical ones) are analyzed in many of the other papers. About 40% of the articles deal with fault tolerance or vulnerability properties using either combinatorial tools or probabilistic ones.

This volume contains technical papers and panel position papers selected from the proceedings of the International Symposium on Information Systems and Technologies for Network Society, held together with the IPSJ (information processing society of Japan) National Convention, in September 1997. Papers were submitted from all over the world, especially from Japan, Korea and China.
