'A brilliant concept, executed with enviable elegance' Lucy Worsley 'A gem of a book. Thanks to Daisy Dunn's elegant and lively retelling of history, the women of the ancient world are restored to the centre of the story of classical antiquity. It was a joy to read.' Peter Frankopan Spanning 3,000 years, from the birth of Minoan Crete to the death of the Julio-Claudian dynasty in Rome, a magisterial new history of the ancient world told, for the very first time, through women. For centuries, men have been writing histories of antiquity filled with warlords, emperors and kings. But when it comes to incorporating women aside from Cleopatra and Boudica, writers have been more comfortable descri...

Oxford thought it was at war. And then it was. After the horrors of the First World War, Oxford looked like an Arcadia - a dream world - from which pain could be shut out. Soldiers arrived with pictures of the university fully formed in their heads, and women finally won the right to earn degrees. Freedom meant reading beneath the spires and punting down the river with champagne picnics. But all was not quite as it seemed. The women of Oxford still faced a battle to emerge from their shadows. And among the dons a major conflict was beginning to brew. This singular tale of Oxford colleagues and rivals encapsulates the false sense of security that developed across the country in the interwar years. With the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich came the subversion of history for propaganda. In academic Oxford, the fight was on not only to preserve the past from the hands of the Nazis, but also to triumph, one don over another, as they became embroiled in a war of their own.

Summary of Daisy Dunn's The Shadow of Vesuvius

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Roman Empire was based around the city of Rome, which was situated on the coast of the Bay of Naples. Pliny the Elder, an admiral, was in charge of maintaining and fitting out the boats that served primarily as protectors of the seas off Italy. #2 Pliny the Elder was a friend of Rectina, who lived beneath Vesuvius. She was terrified, and begged him to help her escape. He changed his plan and launched the entire fleet to help as many people as he could. #3 The fleet continued to head towards land, but the pumice and ash began to pile up in front of them. They were unable to reach Rectina, so they decided to land in Stabiae, a town just south of Pompeii. #4 The inhabitants of Campania were used to earthquakes, and they did not consider them to be particularly frightening. They were not aware that what was happening was the result of a volcanic eruption.
