Human Machine Interaction

Human Machine Interaction, or more commonly Human Computer Interaction, is the study of interaction between people and computers. It is an interdisciplinary field, connecting computer science with many other disciplines such as psychology, sociology and the arts. The present volume documents the results of the MMI research program on Human Machine Interaction involving 8 projects (selected from a total of 80 proposals) funded by the Hasler Foundation between 2005 and 2008. These projects were also partially funded by the associated universities and other third parties such as the Swiss National Science Foundation. This state-of-the-art survey begins with three chapters giving overviews of the domains of multimodal user interfaces, interactive visualization, and mixed reality. These are followed by eight chapters presenting the results of the projects, grouped according to the three aforementioned themes.

In 2009 the US House of Representatives passed legislation requiring reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent over the coming decade. Later that year, President Obama went to Copenhagen to sign a treaty requiring reductions by 50 percent over a two-decade period. The President came back with nothing: no firm commitment to reduce emissions and only a vague target to hold global temperature rises to under 2 C. How does a President who has a 75-vote majority in the House and a 19-vote majority in the Senate who has pre-approval for a treaty reducing greenhouse gas production by 18 percent not achieve a treaty with at least the minimum goal of 18 percent reductions by 2020?Others hav...

Actionable Science of Global Environment Change

This volume teaches readers how to sort through the vast mountain of climate and environmental science data to extract actionable insights. With the advancements in sensing technology, we now observe petabytes of data related to climate and the environment. While the volume of data is impressive, collecting big data for the sake of data alone proves to be of limited utility. Instead, our quest is for actionable data that can drive tangible actions and meaningful impact. Yet, unearthing actionable insights from the accumulated big data and delivering them to global stakeholders remains a burgeoning field. Although traditional data mining struggles to keep pace with data accumulation, scientif...
