Language and Violence

Language and Violence

This book combines scholarship in pragmatics, linguistic anthropology, and philosophy to address the problem of violence in language. How do words wound? What is the relation between physical and linguistic violence? How do racial invectives, misogynous language, homophobic slurs, among other forms of hate speech, affect the body and make us vulnerable to conditions of injurability that language brings about? While investigating the limits that violence poses for everyday speech action, understanding, representation, and our shared frameworks of intelligibility, this collective volume theoretically bridges knowledge from canons in linguistic pragmatics, continental philosophy and linguistic/semiotic anthropology and the dialogic perspective of subjects who are located in the peripheries of South America and Europe. The scholarship gathered here intends to offer a perspective on the violence of words that is attentive to practices and sensibilities that do not always fit into hegemonic ideologies of self and language.

Polymer Engineering

Polymer Engineering focuses on the preparation and application of polymers in several hot topics such as artificial photosynthesis, water purification by membrane technologies, and biodiesel production from wastewater plants. The authors not only describe the latest developments in polymer science, but also support these experimental results by computational chemistry and modelling studies.

Raman Spectroscopy

Raman Spectroscopy

This book gives a wide overview of the state-of-the-art applications of Raman spectroscopy in characterization of materials and biomaterials. The Raman signal is intrinsically smaller than other vibrational techniques; however, mainly through intensification processes, such as resonance Raman (RR) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the Raman cross section can be strongly amplified. Thoroughly in these signal amplifications, the study of a diversity of chemical systems and the use of Raman technique for in situ and in vivo measurements is possible. The main goal of this book is to open up to an extended audience the possibilities of uses of Raman spectroscopy. In fact, this collective work will be beneficial to students, teachers, and researchers of many areas who are interested to expand their knowledge about Raman spectroscopy applied to nanotechnology, biotechnology, environmental science, inorganic chemistry, and health sciences.

Comparative Perspectives on the Rise of the Brazilian Novel presents a framework of comparative literature based on a systemic and empirical approach to the study of the novel and applies that framework to the analysis of key nineteenth-century Brazilian novels. The works under examination were published during the period in which the forms and procedures of the novel were acclimatized as the genre established and consolidated itself in Brazil.

From Conquest to Colony

A new history of Brazil's eighteenth century that foregrounds debates about wealth, difference, and governance Transformations in Portugal and Brazil followed the discovery of gold in Brazil's hinterland and the hinterland's subsequent settlement. Although earlier conquests and evangelizations had incorporated new lands and peoples into the monarchy, royal officials now argued that the extraction of gold and the imperatives of rivalry and commerce demanded new approaches to governance to ensure that Brazil's wealth flowed to Portugal and into imperial networks of exchange. Using archival records of royal and local administrations, as well as contemporary print culture, Kirsten Schultz shows ...

The REV conference aims to discuss the fundamentals, applications and experiences in remote engineering, virtual instrumentation and related new technologies, as well as new concepts for education on these topics, including emerging technologies in learning, MOOCs & MOOLs, Open Resources, and STEM pre-university education. In the last 10 years, remote solutions based on Internet technology have been increasingly deployed in numerous areas of research, science, industry, medicine and education. With the new focus on cyber-physical systems, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and the digital transformation in industry, economy and education, the core topics of the REV conference have become indispensable elements of a future digitized society. REV 2018, which was held at the University of Applied Sciences in Duesseldorf from 21–23 March 2018, addressed these topics as well as state-of-the-art and future trends.
