andererseits is a collaborative project undertaken by students and faculties of universities in the USA (Duke and the University of Notre Dame), in Luxembourg (University of Luxembourg), and in Germany (University of Duisburg-Essen). It provides a forum for research and reflection on topics related to the German-speaking world and the field of German Studies. Works presented in the publication come from a wide variety of genres including book reviews, poetry, essays, editorials, forum discussions, academic notes, lectures, as well as traditional peer-reviewed academic articles. By publishing such a diverse array of material, we hope to demonstrate the extraordinary value of the humanities in general, and German Studies in particular, on a variety of intellectual and cultural levels. This edition features contributions by Carsten Dutt, Klaus Modick, Tanja Nusser, Thomas Pfau, Margarethe von Trotta, and others.
The two-volume set LNCS 10297 + 10298 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Human Aspects of IT for the Aged Population, ITAP 2017, held as part of HCI International 2017 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. HCII 2017 received a total of 4340 submissions, of which 1228 papers were accepted for publication after a careful reviewing process. The 83 papers presented in the two volumes of ITAP 2017 were organized in topical sections as follows: Part I: aging and technology acceptance; user-centred design for the elderly; product design for the elderly; aging and user experience; digital literacy and training. Part II: mobile and wearable interaction for the elderly; aging and social media; silver and intergenerational gaming; health care and assistive technologies and services for the elderly; aging and learning, working and leisure.
What happens to our sense of agency, our general ability to perform actions in our life worlds, in the course of media reception and appropriation? Whilst considering media communication as a special form of social action, this work reconsiders the key concepts of social action theory, pragmatism, communication theory as well as film, game and television theory. It thus integrates agency as the key to understanding ‘doing media’ and at the same time conceptualizes agency as a specific mode of involvement across media boundaries. This approach amalgamates miscellaneous ideas and conceptions such as interactivity, participation, cognitive control, play or empowerment and applies the theoretical considerations on the basis of textual analyses of the films Inception and The Proposal, the TV shows Lost and I’m a Celebrity and the video games Grand Theft Auto IV and The Walking Dead.
Audiences for contemporary German film and television are becoming increasingly transnational, and depictions of German cultural history are moving beyond the typical post-war focus on Germany’s problematic past. Entertaining German Culture explores this radical shift, building on recent research into transnational culture to argue that a new process of internal and external cultural reabsorption is taking place through areas of mutually assimilating cultural exchange such as streaming services, an increasingly international film market, and the import and export of Anglo-American media formats.
This volume explores the rise of immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and 360 videos in the newsroom and how they affect newsmaking for journalists, news sources, and audiences. As these technologies offer journalists new and exciting opportunities to connect more deeply, emotionally, and presently with their audience, they also introduce unique ethical and practical questions concerning the collection and use of biometric, sensory, and metadata.
