AI Approaches to the Complexity of Legal Systems
This book constitutes revised selected papers from the two International Workshops on Artificial Intelligence Approaches to the Complexity of Legal Systems, AICOL IV and AICOL V, held in 2013. The first took place as part of the 26th IVR Congress in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, during July 21-27, 2013; the second was held in Bologna as a joint special workshop of JURIX 2013 on December 11, 2013. The 19 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this book. They are organized in topical sections named: social intelligence and legal conceptual models; legal theory, normative systems and software agents; semantic Web technologies, legal ontologies and argumentation; and crowdsourcing and online dispute resolution (ODR).
Legal Knowledge and Information Systems
This volume contains the proceedings of the seventeenth Jurix conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (Jurix 2004), which was held at the Harnack Haus of the Max Planck Society, in Berlin, Germany. Although the Jurix conference moved from The Netherlands to Germany, almost half of the papers are from The Netherlands. Except for a paper from Canada, the others are from 5 other countries in Western Europe. The effort to extend Jurix beyond The Netherlands and establish it as the leading European conference on legal knowledge systems is making progress. The papers in this publication focus on the topics of legal knowledge management and information retrieval; legal knowledge acquisition using natural language processing; legal ontologies; case-based reasoning; reasoning about evidence and legal reasoning support.

Defining Pragmatics
Although there is no shortage of definitions for pragmatics the received wisdom is that 'pragmatics' simply cannot be coherently defined. In this groundbreaking book Mira Ariel challenges the prominent definitions of pragmatics, as well as the widely-held assumption that specific topics – implicatures, deixis, speech acts, politeness – naturally and uniformly belong on the pragmatics turf. She reconstitutes the field, defining grammar as a set of conventional codes, and pragmatics as a set of inferences, rationally derived. The book applies this division of labor between codes and inferences to many classical pragmatic phenomena, and even to phenomena considered 'beyond pragmatics'. Surprisingly, although some of these turn out pragmatic, others actually turn out grammatical. Additional intriguing questions addressed in the book include: why is it sometimes difficult to distinguish grammar from pragmatics? Why is there no grand design behind grammar nor behind pragmatics? Are all extragrammatical phenomena pragmatic?
