Originally published in 1888, Joy and Other Poems was Dandridge's first published collection and, at least a portion, of the poems were written at her home in Shepherdstown. Containing a wonderful mix of poetry with fanciful language, naturalistic settings, and wonderfully descriptive botanical observations, Joy and Other Poems is a dynamic example of the work of one of Shepherdstown's most successful writers. Born in Denmark, to the American ambassador and his wife, Caroline "Danske" Dandridge lived a portion of her childhood in New York, then Shepherdstown, WV, and New York again. Returning to West Virginia after marrying, she wrote extensively, including poetry, gardening articles, and historical pieces. Her pride and joy remained her gardens at Rose Brake, her estate, which were designed and tended with the assistance of Tom and Charity Devonshire. She died in 1914, survived by only one of her three children.

Caroline "Danske" Dandridge (1854-1914) was a prominent West Virginian poet and historian of her generation. In numerous articles published in the leading gardening magazines of the time, Dandridge brought readers to her country estate on the outskirts of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. A place she called Rose Brake. The Garden at Rose Brake is the first collection of Danske Dandridge's garden writings. These articles provide delicate and sumptuous descriptions of Rose Brake's gardening delights and offer a glimpse into the life of one of West Virginia's most acclaimed writers. Justin McHenry is a writer and historian, and the archivist for American Public University System.

Caged Heroes - American POW Experiences from the American Revolution to the Present is snapshot of four hundred years of hostage and prisoner of war experiences. Caged Heroes details prisoners experiences from the moment they are told to put their hands up, through their detentions, and culminating in their releases. It examines the successes and failures of the United States government to prepare its forces for prisoner events; discussing survival schools, rules on how prisoners are told to act while in captivity and glimpses of how being taken prisoner effects the prisoners and guards alike. Using numerous personal interviews and diaries of former prisoners (and their spouses), the reader gets a rare look at the horrors these men and women experienced. Containing an extensive bibliography and complete POW rosters from several conflicts, this book will add to any casual readers knowledge and serve as a top reference for those wanting to understand more about this misunderstood field.
