Este texto pretende proporcionar una visión global sobre cómo los seres humanos han ampliado los horizontes cosmográficos, incluyendo la interacción con otras áreas del conocimiento. Así, se ha realizado un estudio pormenorizado del desarrollo paralelo de los descubrimientos geográficos y astronómicos, desde Mesopotamia hasta el siglo XIX. Por tanto, se han contextualizado los avances científicos dentro de los movimientos culturales que ocurrieron de manera simultánea y con los eventos históricos que los acompañan, bien como precedentes o como sus consecuencias. Se intenta dar explicaciones a tres objetivos interrelacionados a lo largo de la historia. Así, el texto se articula en torno a la exploración del mundo y su lugar en el sistema solar, teniendo en cuenta los contextos políticos y culturales de cada momento, pero también describe el problema de la longitud y su resolución a lo largo del tiempo, con especial énfasis en el papel de los países de la Europa meridional.
