  • Categories: Art

In this lavishly illustrated book, the renowned London Gallerist David Gill reveals his personal perspective and influence on the world of design-art. He also presents the works of artists, sculptors, and designers he admires, champions, and nurtures, among them Barnaby Barford, Mattia Bonetti, the Campana brothers Zaha Hadid, Donald Judd, Jorge Pardo, Grayson Perry, and Fredrikson Stallard. In addition, the book features previously unseen photographs of his galleries and exhibitions, his own designs, his curated interiors, and other rare glimpses of the private collections and homes of renowned collectors with whom Gill has had relationships over a quarter of a century. It also includes photographs of his private collections in his own homes: a converted handbag factory south of the River Thames; the eighteenth-century Albany apartments in London's Mayfair, and his latest home, a restored palazzo in Valletta, the capital of Malta.

PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for...

Britten: War Requiem

Widely regarded as one of the greatest choral works of the twentieth century, Britten's War Requiem was first performed at the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. It provocatively juxtaposes the vivid anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen with the Latin Requiem Mass in a passionate outcry against man's inhumanity to man. This handbook explores the background to Britten's use of the Owen texts, charting the development of the composer's lifelong pacifist beliefs and (in a chapter contributed by Philip Reed of the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh) detailing the process of composition from hitherto unpublished correspondence and manuscript sources. The musical structure is investigated, and the work's compositional idiom related to Britten's output as a whole. A concluding chapter surveys the fluctuating critical responses to the score, and includes discussion of the composer's legendary 1963 recording and Derek Jarman's controversial interpretation on film.

It tells the true stories of the 46 pioneers who did most to master the art of celestial photography, as it was known during its early days; and whose efforts have made it possible for us to see the many magnificent pictures of the Universe featured in books, magazines and on the internet. In its TWO magnificent volumes is contained an unbelievable collection of tales of adventure, adversity and ultimate triumph and tells the uplifting stories of this small band of ordinary men and women, who did such extraordinary things; overcoming obstacles as diverse as war, poverty, cholera, death, very unfriendly cannibal natives and even explod...
