HONG KONG x 24 x 365

This in-between phase, without major dramas, where history was only with a small 'h', is the subject of this locally orientated micro-historical analysis of one of the world's great cities – which had so lost self-confidence in this period that it started promoting itself as 'Asia's World City', but which might yet prove to be a city that changes China (and therefore the world). Specifying this time, through a collection of colour photographs taken during a randomly chosen twelve-month period, David Clarke presents a year in the life of the city in which he has lived for the last two decades. An antidote to the tourist picture-postcard view of Hong Kong which is so often propagated to locals and visitors alike, these images and their accompanying text are produced from a proximity which enables both a critical engagement with the city and a celebration of its uniqueness. Personal in its perspective, this extended photo essay invites you to join a fabricated journey through the real space of Hong Kong, looking awry at scenes too often photographed before, and looking anew at scenes too often overlooked.

Modern Chinese Art

  • Categories: Art

"Modern Chinese Art explores the interactions of the two traditions, Chinese and Western, as Chinese painters and sculptors have attempted to address the social and cultural effects of modernism. Accompanied by high-quality reproductions of original art works, the text treats the works of Chinese artists - whether using traditional media or adopting media and techniques imported from the West - from the late nineteenth century through to the present day. At once a survey of the most influential Chinese visual artists of the century and a provocative exploration of modernity's influences. Modern Chinese Art will appeal equally to readers just discovering this rich artistic world and to those who have already developed an interest in Chinese and Western modern art."--BOOK JACKET.

Chinese Art and Its Encounter with the World

  • Categories: Art

Chinese Art and Its Encounter with the Worldexamines Chinese art from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, beginning with discussion of a Chinese portrait modeler from Canton who traveled to London in 1769, and ending with an analysis of art and visual culture in post-colonial Hong Kong. By means of a series of six closely-focused case studies, often deliberately introducing non-canonical or previously marginalized aspects of Chinese visual culture, it analyzes Chinese art's encounter with the broader world, and in particular with the West. Offering more than a simple charting of influences, it uncovers a pattern of richly mutual interchange between Chinese art and its others. Arguing ...

Reclaimed Land

Between the end of 1994 and the beginning of 2000 - the last five years of the previous millenium - David Clarke took at least one black-and-white photo every day as he created a unique 'photo diary'. Drawing on this extensive visual archive, Reclaimed Land: Hong Kong in Transition offers a personal and critical perspective on the life of one of the world's most vibrant cities during a time of great change and self-questioning. This innovatively conceived book presents an analysis in deeply considered words and imaginative images of five years of Hong Kong's history whose exact mid-point - midnight on 30 June 1997 - saw the end of British colonial rule and the establishment of the Hong Kong ...

Sunspots.

For more than seventy years Twillingate - Newfoundland's "Capital of the North" - was home to its own weekly newspaper, the Twillingate Sun. Founded by J. P. Thompson in 1880, the paper kept locals informed on a wide range of topics, including world events and Governmental news from Newfoundland's capital, St. John's. First and foremost, the Sun was a local paper, geared to the needs of readers in outport Newfoundland. Its pages always included many happenings from Notre Dame Bay, particularly the area that now makes up the Provincial District of The Isles of Notre Dame: Twillingate, New World Island, Change Islands and Fogo Island. This work is the first in a two volume set. In it, David Clarke presents some of the Twillingate Sun's most interesting editorials, correspondence and letters, spanning its entire run from the 1880s to the 1950s. These are arranged by topic area, such as the fishery, Confederation, church histories, and marine disasters. The work is illustrated throughout, and includes introductions and commentary by Dr. Clarke.
