Many senior managers are faced with the decision as to whether or not they should 'go' for empowerment. Their major concern is the likely effect of empowerment on mangers, supervisors, and the organisation as a whole. Empowerment has the capacity to bring about major changes in the roles of every key player, and ultimately leads to the emergence of a new organisation. This book examines the implications for empowerment at every level, including such issues as training, career paths, company communications and the ability to respond to the demands of the market place. It is supported by plentiful case study material, much of it drawn from the author's own experience.

Young Soeharto

Young Soeharto

When a reluctant President Sukarno gave Lt Gen Soeharto full executive authority in March 1966, Indonesia was a deeply divided nation, fractured along ideological, class, religious and ethnic lines. Soeharto took a country in chaos, the largest in Southeast Asia, and transformed it into one of the “Asian miracle” economies—only to leave it back on the brink of ruin when he was forced from office thirty-two years later. Drawing on his astonishing range of interviews with leading Indonesian generals, former Imperial Japanese Army officers and men who served in the Dutch colonial army, as well as years of patient research in Dutch, Japanese, British, Indonesian and US archives, David Jenk...

This book introduces nuclear data to the newcomer and provides a basic introduction to the role of nuclear data as the foundation of nuclear structure study. The material presented assumes no prior knowledge of the content or language used in communicating details of nuclear data. The approach builds on basic concepts: from gross properties of nuclei, through properties of quantum excited states, to simple model perspectives. The role of spectroscopy is thoroughly integrated, across all types of measurements, with many illustrations, to show how properties of nuclei are deduced. The basic technical methods needed for the deduction of nuclear properties from raw data are presented in animated figures, video tutorials, and accompanying PowerPointa presentations. The level of presentation provides access for students and researchers in applied areas that use nuclear data, e.g., medical applications and nuclear security. Overall, the book focuses on pedagogy and accessibility to the data aspect of nuclear physics. Part of IOP Series in Nuclear Spectroscopy and Nuclear Structure.

Shipowners of Cardiff

From 1875 to the present day, the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Incorporated Shipowners' Association has been the representative body for shipowners in Cardiff and other Bristol Channel ports. This study looks at some of the most representative periods in its history: the reaction of the Association to the proposal to build new docks in Barry in the 1880s, the Seaman's Strike in 1911, and the schism which split the Association in 1912-14. David Jenkins also reveals that a barrage across the estuary of the rivers Taff and Ely was first proposed as early as 1920. Nothing came of that proposal, but in 1929 a similar scheme was once more under consideration, comprising a dam with two locks across the tidal channel, between Penarth Head and Queen Alexandra lock.

Do your performance measures seek primarily to detect and control undesirable activities, rather than sharing and rewarding productive behaviour? Every organisation needs to measure its performance and that of the people it employs; David Jenkins shows you how to make more productive use of such measures. For measures to be accurate and reliable there are fundamental rules that need to be applied. Ignoring or misapplying them undermines performance and impedes the achievement of the corporate goal. For any enterprise, data must be available across the whole spectrum of activity in which it is engaged. The quality of that information will depend on the way it is measured. In some commercial o...
