A Preaching Workbook

A Preaching Workbook

A highly practical book on how to preach effectively. This is a book for all preachers (of any denomination), be they ordained or readers, students preparing for a preaching ministry, or lay-people called on to preach from time to time. Anyone who preaches knows how much help is needed within preaching, because this form of communication is a demanding and difficult one. This workbook provides just the help people must have. In his introduction, David Day describes the ambivalence in churches about preaching. He goes on to help preachers construct and deliver sermons that draw the practice closer to the high theology we hold of the sermon as the 'word of God'. David Day believes that the best and most effective preaching is biblical, and several chapters focus on how to draw our message authentically from scripture. He also gives plenty of practical help on the craft of preaching. And in doing so, he is brave enough to expose some of his own sermons as examples of good or (occasionally) bad practice, as well as sermons from fifty or so preachers who are equally brave in offering their own efforts.

Two brothers-one searching for answers to his father's suicide, the other for relief from a decade of guilt-share a dark family secret. A deputy, consumed by the decade-old disappearance of her cousin, draws lines connecting both brothers to her own obsession. When the discovery of an ancient artifact summons an old man to a small town, the stone relic's haphazard unearthing strips the townsfolk of their daily facade and forces them to confront their secrets. The birth of an ancient evil looms on the horizon. This is how the end begins, not with politicians and soldiers, but with the quiet destruction of a small town in Southeastern Ohio. This is the second coming, but it's not Jesus, and no...

In J. R. R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, Middle-earth endured cataclysmic wars and critical battles, causing great men, women and mystical creatures to arise, influence and shape the course of its history. Here in this book, Tolkien expert David Day examines the complexities surrounding Tolkien's portrayal of good and evil, and analyses Middle-earth's most celebrated heroes and the literary, historical and mythological sources that inspired their creation. A rediscovered gem... Originally published under the title My Diary of Rambles with the 25th Mass. Volunteer Infantry, with Burnside's Coast Division; 18th Army Corps, and Army of the James by King and Billings, Printers, in 1884. This edition contains an additional editor's preface and editorial comments. Although David L. Day was a "common" soldier he was without a doubt a highly individual member of the Union Army. His diary reflects this. He makes little mention of grand battles, great commanders, or political schemes. He wrote instead of his own experiences, observing his surroundings, his comrades and enemies, his emotions. Everything about the South fascinated him, from the way Southerners persisted in burning their own property whenever his regiment approached, to their farming practices and even their unique way of giving directions. He saw his service in the Army as not only a duty to the Union he loved but an opportunity to learn how the other half of America lived. His years in the South might as well have been an extended tour in a foreign country. And every moment of it held his interest.
