David T. Mason (1943-1997) was a critical and enigmatic philosopher and poet who challenges his readers to look beyond the hypocrisy and foibles of the modern era to create a better and more humane world. Mason, a devoted professor of political philosophy at Mary Baldwin College and other institutions, left us an anthology of poetry that will amuse, stimulate and perhaps even enrage the thoughtful reader.

David Mason was born in Washington State, forty-odd degrees north latitude, and now lives on the Australian island of Tasmania, forty-odd degrees south latitude. That Pacific crossing is the work of a lifetime of devotion and change. The rich new poems of Pacific Light explore the implications of the light as well as peace and its opposing forces. What does it mean to be an immigrant and face the ultimate borders of our lives? How can we say the word home and mean it? These questions have obsessed Mason in his major narrative works, The Country I Remember and Ludlow, as well as his lyric and dramatic writing. Pacific Light is a culmination and a deepening of that work, a book of transformations, history and love, endurance and unfathomable beauty, by a poet "at the height of his powers."

A Concise History of Modern Europe

Highlighting the most important events, ideas, and individuals that shaped modern Europe, A Concise History of Modern Europe provides a readable, succinct history of the continent from the Enlightenment and the French Revolution to the present day. Any reader needing a broad overview of the sweep of European history since 1789 will find this book, published in a first edition under the title Revolutionary Europe, an engaging and cohesive narrative.

This volume provides an overview of the costs, benefits, consequences, and prospects for rebuilding nations emerging from violent conflict. The rationale for this comes from the growing realization that, in the post-Cold War era and in the aftermath of 9/11, our understanding of conflict and conflict resolution has to include consideration of the conditions conducive to sustaining the peace in nations torn by civil war or interstate conflict. The chapters analyze the prospects for building a sustainable peace from a number of different perspectives, examining: the role of economic development democratization respect for human rights the potential for renewal of conflict the United Nations an...

Writes to Knox in distress. Thanks him for the recommendation to Governor Bowdoin, but informs him that a Major [likely William] Perkins was appointed to a position instead of him. Declares he is now left destitute, especially since his leg was injured over the summer and he was unable to move around or work. Hopes Knox will continue in his kindness and help him find a position. Asks if Mr. Haggard might hire him to work with Mr. Hastings at the post office; declares he only has his wife and one daughter left at home to support, so any little bit helps. In a separate note at the bottom, discusses his attempts to obtain a certificate of service. See GLC02437.03217 for a letter on the same topic.

One of the most shameful horrors of the long battle for union organizing rights occurred near tiny Ludlow, Colorado. Coal miners struck, and were kicked out of their company-owned homes. They settled in an ad hoc tent community and held out well until April 1914, when Colorado National Guards got nasty. Eighteen tenters were killed, most of them children suffocated in fires set by rampaging guardsmen. Mason fills out the historical record through the perspectives of two actors in its events.
