The Murder of Bessie Sheppard
In 1817 a young girl of no importance called Elizabeth Sheppard was murdered in Mansfield. An ex-soldier called Charles Rotherham, who had fought against Napoleon, was hanged for the crime - then history forgot about them both - yet the town erected a monument to this insignificant girl, not at her graveside, but at the site of her murder. Her grave remains unmarked. Her monument, though, includes details of the man hanged for the crime. The author re-investigated the murder using contemporary records and reconstructions and concludes that the hanged man could well have been innocent. No-one ever spoke up on his behalf, nor was any defence ever presented until the author chose to do so himself. Elizabeth was forgotten. No descendants would cherish her memory. The author wanted to rectify this and pass the girl on to a family, a family that, prior to his investigation was unknown and lived many thousands of miles away. If the hanged man was innocent, was it possible from the scant records available to discover what might really have happened in that insignificant Regency town two hundred years ago? Was it possible, this late, to identify the real culprit?
Mass Market Medieval
Beginning in 1976 with the first issue of the journal Studies in Medievalism, all things medieval and the concept of medievalism became a hot topic in culture studies. Medievalism examines how different groups, individuals, or eras use and shape the image of the Middle Ages, differentiating between historical knowledge of the Middle Ages and what we have made the period out to be. The 13 essays in this book explore the medieval invasion of today's media and consider the various ways--from film and print to websites and video games--that the Middle Ages have been packaged for consumption. Essays encompass diverse theoretical perspectives and are grouped loosely around distinct functions of medievalism, including the exposure of recent social concerns; the use of medieval images in modern political contexts; and the medieval's influence on products of today's popular culture. The legitimization of the study of medievalism and the effect of medievalism on the more traditional subject of medieval studies are also discussed. The Life and Art of David Marshall
Part biography, part art history, part art commentary and first in the new series: The Unheralded Artists of BC, this book tells the story of a prodigious sculptor whose artistic legacy is known to only a few collectors, fellow sculptors and curators. Illustrated throughout with rare colour photographs, the lively, wide ranging text is based on original interviews, letters and diaries. A resident of Vancouver from his early twenties on, Marshall was admired as a master carver but also worked extensively in bronze. At a time when conceptual and installation art dominated, he worked in the Modernist tradition he shared with his friend, Henry Moore, who was one of many influences. His work is at the Van Dusen Gardens. He was a founding member of the Sculptors' Society of British Columbia. He died in 2006. The Practice of the Meal
Reflecting a growing interest in consumption practices, and particularly relating to food, this cross disciplinary volume brings together diverse perspectives on our (often taken for granted) domestic mealtimes. By unpacking the meal as a set of practices - acquisition, appropriation, appreciation and disposal - it shows the role of the market in such processes by looking at how consumers make sense of marketplace discourses, whether this is how brand discourses influence shopping habits, or how consumers interact with the various spaces of the market. Revealing food consumption through both material and symbolic aspects, and the role that marketplace institutions, discourses and places play in shaping, perpetuating or transforming them, this holistic approach reveals how consumer practices of ‘the meal’, and the attendant meaning-making processes which surround them, are shaped.
