Frontiers in Guided Wave Optics and Optoelectronics

As the editor, I feel extremely happy to present to the readers such a rich collection of chapters authored/co-authored by a large number of experts from around the world covering the broad field of guided wave optics and optoelectronics. Most of the chapters are state-of-the-art on respective topics or areas that are emerging. Several authors narrated technological challenges in a lucid manner, which was possible because of individual expertise of the authors in their own subject specialties. I have no doubt that this book will be useful to graduate students, teachers, researchers, and practicing engineers and technologists and that they would love to have it on their book shelves for ready reference at any time.

A Spiral of a Dream – The Medium

Simão, the protagonist of The Spiral Of A Dream, is a young university student who enrolls at the University of Évora with aspirations of becoming a writer, only to find himself plunging into an existential spiral as he transitions into adulthood. In the first part of this trilogy, The Medium, we encounter a myriad of characters who reflect and embody a generation on the brink. Their personalities are so relatable that we will find echoes from our own lives. The story immerses the reader as a crew member on a ship of self-discovery, navigating a constantly evolving literary landscape. It’s a magical journey, an odyssey that invites us to revisit multiple times. The narrative will resonate deeply, as we all navigate the same turbulent waters of the human soul, revealed in the ever-changing bridge across the sea of time.

Women, Business and the Law 2020

  • Categories: Law

Women, Business and the Law 2020, the sixth edition in a series, analyzes laws and regulations affecting women's economic inclusion in 190 economies. The Women, Business and the Law Index, composed by eight indicators structured around women's interactions with the law as they begin, progress through and end their careers, aligns different areas of the law with the economic decisions women make at various stages of their lives. The indicators are: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension. The report updates all indicators as of September 1, 2019, and builds evidence around the linkages between legal gender equality and women's economic inclusion. By examining the economic decisions women make as they go through different stages of their working lives and the pace of reforms over the past 2 years, Women, Business and the Law makes an important contribution to research and policy discussions about the state of women's economic opportunities and empowerment. While celebrating the progress made, the data and analysis emphasize the work still to be done to ensure economic empowerment for all.

XV Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing – MEDICON 2019

This book gathers the proceedings of MEDICON 2019 – the XV Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing – which was held in September 26-28, 2019, in Coimbra, Portugal. A special emphasis has been given to practical findings, techniques and methods, aimed at fostering an effective patient empowerment, i.e. to position the patient at the heart of the health system and encourages them to be actively involved in managing their own healthcare needs. The book reports on research and development in electrical engineering, computing, data science and instrumentation, and on many topics at the interface between those disciplines. It provides academics and professionals with extensive knowledge on cutting-edge techniques and tools for detection, prevention, treatment and management of diseases. A special emphasis is given to effective advances, as well as new directions and challenges towards improving healthcare through holistic patient empowerment.

This book presents the complete formulation of a new advanced discretization meshless technique: the Natural Neighbour Radial Point Interpolation Method (NNRPIM). In addition, two of the most popular meshless methods, the EFGM and the RPIM, are fully presented. Being a truly meshless method, the major advantages of the NNRPIM over the FEM and other meshless methods, are the remeshing flexibility and the higher accuracy of the obtained variable field. Using the natural neighbour concept, the NNRPIM permits to determine organically the influence-domain, resembling the cellulae natural behaviour. This innovation permits the analysis of convex boundaries and extremely irregular meshes, which is an advantage in the biomechanical analysis, with no extra computational effort associated. This volume shows how to extend the NNRPIM to the bone tissue remodelling analysis, expecting to contribute with new numerical tools and strategies in order to permit a more efficient numerical biomechanical analysis.

The University

The expectations that society places on higher education are remarkably consistent among nations and the problems and issues faced by college and university leaders are quite similar worldwide. In The University the authors look at colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. They examine the purpose of the university, its evolution and change, its degree of autonomy, evaluations of performance and accountability, its role in guaranteeing human rights, financing, and efficiency and the influence of technology on instruction and structure – all issues that are highly relevant to university leaders and legislators who seek to form an...
