1975 was a key year for the women's movement in France. Through a critical exploration of the politics, activism and cultural creativity of that moment, this book evaluates the achievements and legacies of second wave French feminism for subsequent 'waves', including the movement's contemporary resurgence.
Tradition and Agency
The publication of the anthology The Invention of Tradition two decades ago generated an intensive, productive and sometimes confusing debate about issues of cultural politics and continuity. This new book follows up on the debate in two ways. In a substantive introduction the editors disentangle some of the conceptual knots and assess the relevance of the scholarship on invented traditions for an understanding of the relationship between culture and agency. In addition, nine chapters exemplify and develop different aspects of the theoretical discussions through selected case studies from five different regions-Europe, Africa, Indonesia, Australia and the Pacific.

L'ouvrage présente une somme importante du vocabulaire en usage dans la tribu des Ait Hadiddou du Haut Atlas oriental. La collecte a eu lieu dans plusieurs localités du pays de cette tribu entre 1981 et 1991 et principalement dans les villages suivants : Agdal, Amouguer, Aqdim, Imilchil, Outerbate, Timaryine. Le vocabulaire récolté couvre de nombreux champs qui relèvent des pratiques quotidiennes des villageois et, à ce titre, permet de renseigner sur les faits sociaux de la période où la collecte a eu lieu. Loin d'être exhaustif, ce lexique peut être un point de départ pour une recherche approfondie sur la vie du lexique dans la langue et sur la vie des villageois dans leur quotidien.
The Plural Actor
The individual that the social sciences take as an object is most often studied in a particular context or from a single dimension. The actor is analysed as a student, worker, consumer, spouse, reader, sportsperson, a voter etc. However, in societies where individuals live often through simultaneously and successively heterogeneous and sometimes contradictory social experiences, each person inevitably carries a plurality of roles, ways of seeing, feeling and acting. The aim of this study is to consider the ways in which this plurality of worlds and experiences are incorporated into the being of each individual and to observe the individual's actions in a variety of settings. In addition to his sociological viewpoint, the author engages with psychology, history, anthropology and philosophy. His reflections lead him to embark on a program of psychological sociology to highlight the complexities of this plural view of the social.
The Body Impolitic
The Body Impolitic is a critical study of tradition, not merely as an ornament of local and national heritage, but also as a millstone around the necks of those who are condemned to produce it. Michael Herzfeld takes us inside a rich variety of small-town Cretan artisans' workshops to show how apprentices are systematically thwarted into learning by stealth and guile. This harsh training reinforces a stereotype of artisans as rude and uncultured. Moreover, the same stereotypes that marginalize artisans locally also operate to marginalize Cretans within the Greek nation and Greece itself within the international community. What Herzfeld identifies as "the global hierarchy of value" thus frames the nation's ancient monuments and traditional handicrafts as evidence of incurable "backwardness." Herzfeld's sensitive observations offer an intimately grounded way of understanding the effects of globalization and of one of its most visible offshoots, the heritage industry, on the lives of ordinary people in many parts of the world today.
Negotiating Identities in Nordic Migrant Narratives
This edited volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to the question of how identities are negotiated and a sense of belonging established in a world of increasing migration and diversity. Transcending field-specific approaches and differences in foci, the authors investigate how identity is constructed and mediated in face-to-face interactions (in real time and fictional writing), how writers use narratives to express their reorientation and their identity negotiation in a new homeland, and how material objects convey layered meaning to identity and belonging. This engagement with spoken, written and material mediation of identity resonates with recent sociolinguistic investigations on how language is connected to and intersects with embodiment, materiality and time. The volume will be of interest to students and scholars of globalisation and migration studies, sociolinguistics and narrative analysis, anthropology and cultural studies.
Living in a World Heritage Site
Through a thick ethnography of the Fez medina in Morocco, a World Heritage site since 1981, Manon Istasse interrogates how human beings come to define houses as heritage. Istasse interrogates how heritage appears (or not) when inhabitants undertake construction and restoration projects in their homes, furnish and decorate their spaces, talk about their affective and sensual relations with houses, face conflicts in and about their houses, and more. Shedding light on the continuum between houses-as-dwellings and houses-as-heritage, the author establishes heritage as a trajectory: heritage as a quality results from a ‘surplus of attention’ and relates to nostalgia or to a feeling of threat, loss, and disappearance; to values related to purity, materiality, and time; and to actions of preservation and transmission. Living in a World Heritage site provides a grammar of heritage that will allow scholars to question key notions of temporality and nostalgia, the idea of culture, the importance of experts, and moral principles in relation to heritage sites around the globe.
War and the Environment
