Badger Boneyards

The bodies are buried, but the stories are not. From the ornate tombs of Milwaukee beer barons to displaced Chippewa graves and miniscule family plots, Badger Boneyards: The Eternal Rest of the Story unearths the stories of Wisconsin. Football great John Heisman is buried here, as is the state's smallest man, a woman whose tombstone names her murderer, and the boy who would not tell a lie and paid the price. Even in a graveyard, peace proves hard to come by: Wisconsin's Native American tribes have fought for undisturbed grounds and proper burial. A patch of Belgian graves now resides beneath a parking lot while the headstones cluster nearby, and the inhabitants of a Bayfield cemetery were unearthed by a raging flood. Sometimes the dead are recalled with only a first name, and sometimes no name at all. Following the clues in tips from readers, unusual epitaphs, and well-worn stones, Dennis McCann finds the melancholy, the humorous, the tragic, and the universal in Wisconsin's cities of the dead.

Christian Realism and Liberation Theology

Christian Realism and Liberation Theology

Christian Realism and Liberation Theology provides the best interpretation and critique we have of liberation theology. Equally important, however, is McCann's interpretation of Reinhold Niebuhr. For it is McCann's contention that Niebuhr is best appreciated as attempting to provide a form of spirituality sufficient to sustain the frustrations of political struggle. By bringing Niebuhr and liberation theology into creative contrast McCann not only illuminates the contributions and shortcomings of each but helps us better understand the issues confronting the development of an adequate Christian social ethic. This is a book that has needed writing for some time. We are in McCann's debt. -- Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics Divinity School, Duke University

Methods of Ethical Analysis

The book is about showing different ways of doing ethics, highlighting a kind of methodological pluralism. This book attempts to relate the difference in methodology and perspective to difference in identity, focal point of analysis, or projects of persuasion. Difference matters ultimately because pluralism matters. This book is a tutorial in ethical analysis and reasoning. Seminarians and graduate students will be brought into the finer points of ethical analysis, of mastering the ins and outs of ethical methodology, by immersing themselves in critical social-ethical analyses of prominent scholars in the American academy. Students will be guided toward how to develop their own voice in soci...

Liberation, Method and Dialogue

This book analyzes the theological method of liberation theologian Enrique Dussel and, by comparing it with the meta-method of Bernard Lonergan, establishes a paradigm for international theological dialogue. The author suggests that Dussel's non-reductionist understanding of liberation and Lonergan's understanding of the subject-as-subject provide a methodological foundation for critical dialogue between Latin American and North American theologians. The methodological maturation of liberation theology rehearsed in this study suggests how the insights of Latin American theology demand the development of an indigenous form of North American theology of liberation.
