Structural Studies of the de Novo Purine Biosynthesis Enzyme ATIC and of the Natural Killer Cell Receptor NKG2D
The two systems investigated here are both implicated, in extremely divergent ways, in cancer and cancer therapy. Crystal structures of the purine biosynthetic enzyme ATIC have provided several "snapshot" images that are now being incorporated into the design and development of potent anti-neoplastic compounds. The x-ray structures of the natural killer cell receptor NKG2D have provided novel insights into the recognition of transformed and infected cells by the innate immune system.
