Counseling and Psychotherapy for South Asian Americans

This essential text explores what it means to be a South Asian American living in the US while seeking, navigating and receiving psychological, behavioral or counseling services. It delves into a range of issues including cultural identity, racism, colorism, immigration, gender, sexuality, parenting, and caring for older adults. Chapter authors provide research literature, clinical and cultural considerations for interviewing and treatment planning, case examples, questions for reflection, suggested readings, and resources. The book also includes insights on the future of South Asian American mental health, social justice, advocacy, and public policy. Integrating theory, research, and application, this book serves as a clinical guide for therapists, instructors, professors and supervisors in school/university counseling centers working with South Asian American clients, as well as for counseling students.

Natural Materials and Products from Insects: Chemistry and Applications

This book reviews the latest research on bioproducts from various economically important insects, such as silkworms, honey bees, lac and drosophila, and termites, and discusses their general, biomedical and industrial applications in detail. It includes chapters focusing on insects as a food source, probiotics, silk-based biomaterials, insect pheromones, insects as biomedicine source, pupa oil chemistry, non-protein compounds from Lepidopteran insects, insect chitin and chitosan, polyphenols and flavonoids. Model insects like Bombyx mori or bees were domesticated in Asian countries thousands of years ago. Over time, natural products from these animals became industrialized and today they attracting increasing attention thanks to their sustainability and their manifold applications in agriculture and biomedicine. The book is intended for entomologists, material scientists, natural product researchers and biotechnologists.

High-throughput molecular technologies ("omics") can help to decipher the contributions of different physiological systems and identify candidate molecules that are representative of different physiological pathways thereby allowing the discovery of biomarkers. Notably, the omics technologies along with and computational methods, bioprospecting, and artificial intelligence will continue to lead to better understanding of biological mechanisms that are responsible for physical attributes, or phenotypes. Research breakthroughs obtained through these technologies can be used to enhance productivity of food animals, meet the increasing demand for animal-sourced foods, enhance high-quality nutrie...

For the past years, more emphasis has been given in understanding the level of cultural adjustment that individuals face on migrating to a new country. Not much attention has been given on studying repatriates. This phenomenological study deals with the experiences of 17 Indian repatriates, their emotional challenges and the various coping strategies that they had to employ in order to smoothen their repatriation process on returning to their home country. Six main themes were identified on applying thematic analysis to the individual semi-structured interviews: relief from hardships faced in the host country, stronger bond with the home country, feeling of being an alien in your home countr...

A new era of complexity science is emerging, in which nature- and bio-inspired principles are being applied to provide solutions. At the same time, the complexity of systems is increasing due to such models like the Internet of Things (IoT) and fog computing. Will complexity science, applying the principles of nature, be able to tackle the challenges posed by highly complex networked systems? Bio-Inspired Optimization in Fog and Edge Computing: Principles, Algorithms, and Systems is an attempt to answer this question. It presents innovative, bio-inspired solutions for fog and edge computing and highlights the role of machine learning and informatics. Nature- or biological-inspired techniques...

From the Shadows of the Mountains

This is the story of a girl, who was born in the remote Chakrata hills (Himalayas), with a limp; She was the first graduate in Jaunsar in 1950s; She was the first woman form this region to join the State services, a male preserve in sixties and seventies - and she rose to become Director, Social Welfare. Her life captures struggles and joys of early Indian women, who were trying to step out of traditional gender roles in the society. Her story captures the Indian slant: while living life on her own terms, she never forgot her mother and other near and dear ones. She tries her best to strike a balance between seeking meaning and a purpose in life for her own self as well as reaching out to others. After retirement from the government job, she became active in Panchayat; was elected as Block Pramukh, Kalsi, near Dehradun; She supported local NGOs and many young girls to get education and stand on their own feet. She recently died in 2011 but continues to be relevant and inspiring for young women and men of this region. A close look at an unusual life.
