Advances in Robot Learning

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 8th European Workshop on Learning Robots, EWLR'99, held in Lausanne, Switzerland in September 1999. The seven revised full workshop papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Also included are two invited full papers. Among the topics addressed are map building for robot navigation, multi-task reinforcement learning, neural network approaches, example-based learning, situated agents, planning maps for mobile robots, path finding, autonomous robots, and biologically inspired approaches.

Saving Persuasion

In today's increasingly polarized political landscape it seems that fewer and fewer citizens hold out hope of persuading one another. Even among those who have not given up on persuasion, few will admit to practicing the art of persuasion known as rhetoric. To describe political speech as "rhetoric" today is to accuse it of being superficial or manipulative. In Saving Persuasion, Bryan Garsten uncovers the early modern origins of this suspicious attitude toward rhetoric and seeks to loosen its grip on contemporary political theory. Revealing how deeply concerns about rhetorical speech shaped both ancient and modern political thought, he argues that the artful practice of persuasion ought to ...

Generalized Nets

The Generalized Nets (GNs) are extensions of Petri nets and of different Petri nets modifications, introduced by the author (1982). In the book, definitions and the basic properties of GNs are given. The GNs extensions and reductions are discussed. GNs, which describe the functioning and results of the work of different types of petri nets, different types of finite automata and of Turing machines, are given. Over the GNs are defined different operations, relations and operators. They can also be transferred onto other nets. Many open problems in the GNs theory are given.

Signal Processing for Communications

With a novel, less classical approach to the subject, the authors have written a book with the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The treatment is therefore less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual aspects, the idea being to allow the readers to think about the subject at a higher conceptual level, thus building the foundations for more advanced topics. The book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vein, the last chapter pulls together the individual topics as discussed throughout the book into an in-depth look at the development of an end-to-end communication system, namely, a modem for communicating digital information over an analog channel.

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

A class of finite element methods, the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods (DGM), has been under rapid development recently and has found its use very quickly in such diverse applications as aeroacoustics, semi-conductor device simula tion, turbomachinery, turbulent flows, materials processing, MHD and plasma simulations, and image processing. While there has been a lot of interest from mathematicians, physicists and engineers in DGM, only scattered information is available and there has been no prior effort in organizing and publishing the existing volume of knowledge on this subject. In May 24-26, 1999 we organized in Newport (Rhode Island, USA), the first international symposium on DGM with eq...
