Making Way in Corpus-based Interpreting Studies
This book presents a collection of state-of-the-art work in corpus-based interpreting studies, highlighting international research on the properties of interpreted speech, based on naturalistic interpreting data. Interpreting research has long been hampered by the lack of naturalistic data that would allow researchers to make empirically valid generalizations about interpreting. The researchers who present their work here have played a pioneering role in the compilation of interpreting data and in the exploitation of that data. The collection focuses on both of these aspects, including a detailed overview of interpreting corpora, a collective paper on the way forward in corpus compilation and several studies on interpreted speech in diverse language pairs and interpreter-mediated settings, based on existing corpora.
Multimodal Technologies for Perception of Humans

Advances in Multilingual and Multimodal Information Retrieval
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 8th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2007, held in Budapest, Hungary, September 2007. The revised and extended papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. There are 115 contributions in total and an introduction. The seven distrinct evaluation tracks in CLEF 2007, are designed to test the performance of a wide range of multilingual information access systems or system components. The papers are organized in topical sections on Multilingual Textual Document Retrieval (Ad Hoc), Domain-Specific Information Retrieval (Domain-Specific), Multiple Language Question Answering (QA@CLEF), cross-language retrieval in image collections (Image CLEF), cross-language speech retrieval (CL-SR), multilingual Web retrieval (WebCLEF), cross-language geographical retrieval (GeoCLEF), and CLEF in other evaluations.
Evaluating Systems for Multilingual and Multimodal Information Access
The ninth campaign of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for European languages was held from January to September 2008. There were seven main eval- tion tracks in CLEF 2008 plus two pilot tasks. This book integrates a wide range of research topics related to and necessary for the development of proactive, smart, computers in the human interaction loop, including the development of audio-visual perceptual components for such environments; the design, implementation and analysis of novel proactive perceptive services supporting humans; the development of software architectures, ontologies and tools necessary for building such environments and services, as well as approaches for the evaluation of such technologies and services.
