A response to the devastating 2019-20 bushfires, Animals Make Us Human both celebrates Australia's unique wildlife and highlights its vulnerability. Through words and images, writers, photographers and researchers reflect on their connection with animals and nature. They share moments of wonder and revelation from encounters in the natural world- seeing a wild platypus at play, an echidna dawdling across a bush track, or the inexplicable leap of a thresher shark; watching bats take flight at dusk, or birds making a home in the backyard; or following possums, gliders and owls into the dark. Hopeful, uplifting and deeply moving, this collection is also an urgent call to action, a powerful remi...
Heat treatment and surface engineering are seen as crucial elements in the design and manufacture of strategic components in a wide range of market sectors and industries including air, sea and land transportation, energy production, mining, defense or agriculture. This book offers a broad review of recent global developments in an application of thermal and thermochemical processing to modify the microstructure and properties of a wide range of engineering materials. Although there is no formal partition of the book, chapters represent two different application areas of heat treatment. The first group covers the conventional heat treatment with processing of bearing rings, wrought and cast ...

The report presents a detailed review of available information on the oxidation of W and its alloys. W is relatively inert below 700 C. As the temperature is increased above this level, however, oxidation becomes progressively more rapid, reaching catastrophic rates at temperatures around 1200 C and above. Various theories for the mechanism and rates of W oxidation at different temperatures are reviewed, and the effect of pressure and water vapor on the stability of W oxides is discussed in detail. The elevatedtemperature reactions of W with other materials, such as refractory oxides, and with gases other than oxygen also are covered. Information on the protection of W by alloying and coating is included. (Author).
'I remember you once told me about mockingbirds and their special talents for mimicry. They steal the songs from others, you said. I want to ask you this: how were our own songs stolen from us, the notes dispersed, while our faces were turned away?' Berlin, 1936. Ernst Schäfer, a young, ambitious zoologist and keen hunter and collector, has come to the attention of Heinrich Himmler, who invites him to lead a group of SS scientists to the frozen mountains of Tibet. Their secret mission: to search for the origins of the Aryan race. Ernst has doubts initially, but soon seizes the opportunity to rise through the ranks of the Third Reich. While Ernst prepares for the trip, he marries Herta, his ...
Nanomaterials for the Detection and Removal of Wastewater Pollutants assesses the role of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in improving both the detection and removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater that originates from municipal and industrial plants. The book covers how nanotechnology is being used to remove common contaminants, including dyes, chlorinated solvents, nitrites/nitrates, and emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products and pesticides. Sections cover nanofiltration, adsorption and remediation. Nanomaterial immobilization recovery is also addressed, along with the quantification of heat/mass transport limitations, sizing aspects a...
